DIY Valve amp kits...

Anyone tried a DIY valve amp kit? Available from a popular auction site. Thought about building one as a project / for a laugh but wondered whether they were actually any good and if so for what. i-Pod dock amplifier? Look nice glowing in the corner? Or just burn the house down due to the lack of quality control where the components are made?

You could also try World Audio Design too which have valve amp kits. Peter Comeau used to be heavily involved pre-IAG days, so it might be worth checking their website out to see if they're still ticking over.

FWIW try a cheapo kit first to get your practical skills down and if you like it take on a more ambitious project. There are some very nice kits out there which would compare favourably with many off the shelf brands.
