I'm not one for taking a great deal of notice of lyrics but every so often I do. I rather like "Where your eyes don't go" by They Might be Giants on Lincoln is good for reminding us of our egos:

"Where your eyes don't go a filthy scarecrow waves its broomstick arms

And does a parody of each unconscious thing you do

When you turn around to look it's gone behind you

On its face it's wearing your confused expression

Where your eyes don't go....."

Anyone care to share some of theirs?

Adam Duritz of Counting Crows is nothing short of a lyrical genius:

I step out the front door like a ghost into the fog where no-one notices the contrast of white on white.

"If dreams are like movies then memories are films about ghosts"

"I was out on the radio just starting to change"

"The smell of hospitals in winter, and the feeling that it's all a lot of oysters, but no pearls."

Strangely genius or making something up that rhymes?

There is no real substitute
For a ball struck squarely and firmly
And you're the kind of girl who wants to
Open up the bottle of pop
Too early in the journey
Our love went flat just like that

It doesn't matter the colour of the car
But what goes on beneath the bonnet
Is there a flag that flies above your heart
And is my name writ there upon it
Wedding cake and toothache
Equals love and pain

I Want You by Elvis Costello is one of the most disturbing songs I can think of: the lyrics are like a stalker's manifesto... But it's not just the lyrics, but also his vocals, plus the way the music builds in an increasingly distorted, dynamic way, before ending in quiet menace. Genius.

What do you make of "Alison"? Don't fully understand it myself I mean, especially this bit "Sometimes I wish that I could stop you from talking

when I hear the silly things that you say.
I think somebody better put out the big light,
cause I can't stand to see you this way."

Sex Pistols Bodies: "Her name was Pauline, she lived in a tree."

Plus a few lines that are not suitable for repeating on a family friendly forum like this.

I turned to face

the empty space

where you used to lie

and look for the spark

that lights the night

through a tear drop

in my eye

I really enjoyed it this morning although it has been somewhat over-played.

I like a few one liners.

James Brown - "I don't know Karate, but I know K-razy"

Happy Mondays - "Son, I'm thirty, I only went with your mother 'cos she's dirty"

Specials - "Wish I had lipstick on my shirt, instead of p*ss stains on my shoes"

'Down By The Sea' by Strawbs (music and lyrics by the great Dave Cousins). All DC's lyrics are beautifully written but this song is one of the highlights, particularly this section (which is really 'devastating' when you hear it tied to the music):

Last night I lay in bed

And held myself

Trying to remember

How it once was with you

How your hands were softer.

Yesterday I found myself

Staring into space

Rather like the sailor

In my own home surroundings

I'm not sure I know me.

If you were me what would you do

Don't tell me I don't need you to

It won't help me now.

My Strawbs highlight...

The King's men took communion-
As the first rays of the sun-
Lit up the castle's gloomy walls-
The fatal day begun-
From the castle green the rooks took flight-
To the high trees in the east-
To their carrion minds the battlefield-
Set a table for a feast.

Probably my favourite lyrics, come from the Moody Blues (Days Of Future Passed)...

Breathe deep the gathering gloom,

Watch lights fade from every room.

Bedsitter people look back and lament,

Another day's useless energy spent.

Impassioned lovers wrestle as one,

Lonely man cries for love and has none.

New mother picks up and suckles her son,

Senior citizens wish they were young.

Cold hearted orb that rules the night,

Removes the colours from our sight.

Red is grey and yellow white.

But we decide which is right,

And which is an illusion?
