Connecting Speaker Cable to a Denon DHT500SD

Apologies if this is a very simple question, but I currently own a Denon DHT500SD home cinema DVD system and am still using the thin freebie speaker cable. It still sounds pretty good but I would like to upgrade this to some higher quality cable to get the best out of the system, but space is pretty tight at the back of the player. At present the freebie speaker cable is inserted directly into the spring clip speaker terminals. I'm not sure that a thicker cable can directly be inserted into the player via the spring clip speaker terminals (it'll just fall out or not have room to go in the first place). Are there special connectors that I can put on the end of the new cable (say Monster Cable speaker cable) so that it slots in to the spring clip speaker terminals? Thanks

If I follow correctly, you can attach thicker cable (without any termination) than bellwire to the same connections - or do you mean will the cable bend to squeeze into the limited space at the back?

The terminals should take thicker cable, but if not you can buy thin speaker pins, such as these from Belkin, to terminate your cables, They'll fit in the springclips.

Sorry for not being clear - my lack of experience. The bellwire is currently inserted into the back of the player via the spring clip speaker terminsals. Its pretty fiddly, but I can just about manage to put the bellwire into those spring clips. But I am not sure that I could squeeze a thicker higher quality cable (without termination) directly into the back of the player.

Hence I wondered whether I could terminate the thicker cable and insert that into the player (I was thinking of a "funnel" type effect ie is it possible to terminate a thick cable and then insert the thinner point into the spring clip speaker terminals).

Thanks Andrew that answers my question. Apologies for not explaining myself clearly.

Are these "4mm banana plugs" that I have seen advertised with some cables or are they thinner than this?

No, 4mm banana plugs are much thicker - ie 4mm - and thus too big for most springclip terminals. These are much thinner and designed to fit into springclips.

Compare and contrast here.

Monster Cable makes a similar product, available in straight and angled versions.

The notches on these plugs are designed for the springclips to grip, whereas banana plugs a) are much thicker and b) have springs built into the plug which grip the socket into which they are inserted.

Next week on whathifi.com, phono plugs...

Thanks for this, very helpful to a newbie like me. Any recommendations on a sensibly priced cable that will get the best out of the Denon. I only want to get something that will do the system justice without costing an arm and a leg (which would be more worthwile on higher end set ups). Cheers.

Perhaps I should be a bit more specific. Will the Belkin Blue Series PureAV 18-Gauge Speaker Cable & Pins do a satisfactory job with the home cinema system (the cable costs about £25 for about 30m)? Second query is whether the Speaker Pins just screw on or I need to solder/ get a crimping tool. Thanks

It depends how much you need. I've never heard the Belkin but there are two of these which you may get a bargain on. Just a thought.ÿ

Saying that, they will probably go over budget. The Belkin looks ideal.
