Hello, in the distant past, more years ago than I care to admit, I had a nice Armstrong tuner-amp, Thorens turntable and B&W speakers. Then we moved into a rented place for a year so I foolishly gave away the amp and turntable, put the speakers in storage and bought a compact system
smiley-frown.gif

3 or 4 compact systems later, I'm fed up with the way pack up after a few years and can't be fixed. I've convinced Her Indoors that the only sensible option is a 'proper' hi fi system even if it means wires all over the place. Needless to say I've lost track of the speakers so I'm starting from scratch.

Can I get a nice CD player, tuner, amp and speakers for £1,000? A white or pale finish would be nice but obviously not essential.

Many thanks in advance, Bob

Forgot to mention the dali's come in gloss white for an extra £19, not bad and the marantz have a silver finish . Looking and sounding good for £1000 all brand new full warranty peace of mind really. If you've been out of the hifi game I think second hand is not the way to go.

How about.

Marantz pm 6005

Marantz cd 6005

Dali zensor 1

About £927 and spend the rest on stands and cables.

Good choice but no tuner in that lot, but if OP has Sky or Freeview box then he could possibly use those for radio.

Also might be worth looking at what Richersounds have in the way of complete systems, often some money to be saved there.E.G currently there's this http://www.richersounds.com/package/system-savers/hi-fi-system-deals/pah01968 @£699.95 could even get the CA 651T then and still be just under budget though of course cables would be extra and take it over the grand

What dealers do you have nearby?

I'm thinking in the region of this. Not heard it but comes with rave reviews and it's practical.

Good idea - many thanks. Unfortunately I can't see the page you've linked to as it defaults to their mobile site home page (bad coding!). Could you list the items?

Thanks again, Bob

The network player will cover radio. If you can get them in silver, that would look the dog's...

If you need a standalone tuner then they can be picked up for peanuts on eBay these days - £20-30 should buy your a more-than-decent one

Very true I bought a CA 651T for less than half it's retail prce. It was just like new. Though you do have to be prepared to risk getting a lemon.

In the mean time I still think using Sky or Freeview box would be OK and could save the OP some money or enable him to spend a bit more on his core requirements

Maybe this from Richersounds at 5p below his grand budget but again would need to get cables though he may already have some from his old system for now http://www.richersounds.com//common/productpictures/pah01831.jpg

New or second hand?

Floorstanding or bookshelf?

New and bookshelf as I've got a huge dresser to put them on

You could well be into problems putting the speakers on a dresser. It's certainly not what I would recommend.

Good luck with your new system, there should be a huge step up in quality waiting for you. :)

Hi Bob,

Would something like Arcam's Solo Mini fit the bill at all, not white, but a rather nice silver finish:

[EDITED AGAIN BY MODS - please do not link to offers on your own website]

They also do the matching Muso speakers, which you may have seen, (@ £299 for a pair)

Cosmetically this is a very nice system, it also offers great sound quality, although not strictly separates....

i really like the look of the CDN. AS I PREFER ACTIVES, I'd think about that and a pair of AVI DM5s (or similar)

i dont do CDs so would prob get a Sonos + DM5s.

Re. All in ones. They're very good, and you might not need to look further than a Marantz.

You need a preamp with the stripped down AVIs. Better off looking at Adam Artist 3s, which are more flexible and considerably cheaper.

I stil think you can't beat amp/speaker combinations at this price, or all-in-ones as the above poster says.

Sorry, used the wrong word. It's actually the base of a dresser with nothing on top. I suppose it would have been called a sideboard once upon a time. But there's no china in it to rattle! Just papers and stuff.

No Sky or Freeview here which is why I need a tuner.

Thanks for all your recommendations

oh yeah :). But the CDN with suitable actives would make a great simple system.
