My duaghter bought a used Alba CP-45 portable casette player and it only lasted 5 months. It suddenly has decided to stop working !

..I dont think it will be viable getting it repaired as it only cost £35

..so on the look out for a good used one with good sounds quality and reliability.. and all for under £50 ish !

Any suggestions ?

Sorry to hear that 🙁
You're right about the possible cost of repair versus the price she paid.
You could check out brands such as Aiwa.

When you say hers stopped working, is it totally dead - on batteries and any plug-in power supply?
You can't see / hear any evidence of the motor running?
Or is it just dead soundwise?
...see I hate the thought of it just being chucked.

Answering both replies ( thanks for them )

It was literally working until she put it in a box and now after trying different batteries there is no sound either on play ffwd etc

As for DAP.. sorry I dont know what you mean

Well it's got 'better sound quality' written in very fancy writing on it 😆
Radio and a recorder for under £20, as Shrek says above, don't expect too much.

Have you got a mate with a screwdriver to open your daughter's one? - nothing to lose by having a look inside, before you bin it.....if you're near SE Essex, leave it with me...I can advise.

PS a DAP is a Digital Audio Player - plays audio off of SD cards (which could include audio transferred from existing tapes).

Agree, but only useful, a DAP that is, if you have the ability to transfer data from cassette, which sounds unlikely.
Presumably daughter has cassettes she wants to play making the suggestion a DAP merely a confusion......
Yes, it may be considered to be the modern equivalent of a portable cassette player but that's not what the OP appears to be looking for.
Answer is anything by Sony that is in good working order........

Yes, telling him what a DAP is, rather than telling him it's his answer.
Cassette player is what she's had, cassette player is what they're after 👍

Thanks to all

I am actually transferring it to my Apple Mac as well as my daughter using it as a cassette player if that makes any difference

Cheers

A DAP is a digital audio player. These are not mechanical and likely to be more reliable than cassette players.

Does it have to be portable - as a walkman etc? There's loads of used cassette players on FB marketplace and ebay, but not sure I have seen many portable ones.

As Shrek has said, Aiwa was quite a good brand back then when cassette players were en vogue. Sony is another one of course - I think Hitachi and possibly Panasonic did too, and should both be quite reliable.

Sorry I had a Dr Suess moment, can I trouble you with Green Eggs and ham??
No!!!
😜
They don't appear to make branded cassette players anymore, like Sony, AiWA, Akai, Phillips etc. unless you find second hand on eBay.
Amazon does have many generic dirt cheap compact cassette and portable players, worth investigating.

For under £50, buy a used Sony Walkman (best pick), or Panasonic RQ.

Key check: get one that’s tested and belt replaced.
Avoid cheap modern new ones—they fail.

Look on eBay/Facebook Marketplace/Vinted.
