Cannonball Adderley - Somethin' Else

Tina Brooks - True Blue

Dexter Gordon - GO

Hank Mobley - Soul Station

Wayne Shorter - Speak No Evil

Spookily enough, I'm listening to Dex's 'Gettin' Around' as I type. 'Go' is top-notch Dexter and that means it's about as good as it gets.

Tina Brooks though....that's somethin'else: the saddest story in the world. 'True Blue' is such a beautiful record and easily one of the very best Blue Notes: it's certainly one of my favourites. All his Blue Note sessions are excellent; he should have been as big as all of those great tenor players, like Hank Mobley or Wayne Shorter and carving out a brilliant career.

That's one mighty fine playlist.

My dad reaches a significant milestone later this month, and I'd like to get him some good Jazz albums that he hasn't got, and maybe doesn't know.

I'm playing that Tina Brooks album on You Tube, and I think it'd be right up his street. Can you think of a few more albums of a similar style? You mentioned Hank Mobley and Wayne Shorter, and I know he hasn't got any albums by either of them. Would they be similar, and can you recommend a particular album by each of them?

Oh that's very hard without knowing somebody, BBB, but I'll have a go. I'm taking it he likes melodic saxophones in a hard bop style ie soulful improvisation but with a decent tune. Listen to these and see if they sound right; if they do, I'll suggest some more.

Oliver Nelson: 'The Blues And The Abstract Truth'. Oliver Nelson is a sonic architect, much like Tina. One of my favourite records.

Sonny Rollins: 'Volume 1' and 'Volume 2' on Blue Note are both lovely records.

Lee Morgan: 'Search For The New Land'. Soulful. Great tunes.

Art Blakey And The Jazz Messengers: 'Moanin'' 'Indestructible'

Hank Mobley: 'Soul Station' 'No Room For Squares'. 'Another Workout'.

Wayne Shorter: 'JuJu', 'Adam's Apple', 'Speak No Evil'

Joe Henderson: 'Page One' 'Our Thing'. Great tenor player.

Herbie Hancock: 'Maiden Voyage' 'Empyrean Isles'.

Jckie Mclean: 'Let Freedom Ring' 'Destination Out'. These are a tad more adventurous.

These are all popular Blue Notes and pretty readily available.

If he likes piano, vibes or guitar jazz I can suggest some titles; just let me know.

Check out Tubby Hayes stuff too.

Well 3 of my 5 last purchased records have been sent back for a refund. Wish Amazon would detail their listings a bit more accurately. Ordering Blue Note 75th reissues expecting good EU pressings and getting flimsy, noisy and skipping USA ones instead is a big disappointment.

I now have a couple of Music Matters reissues on the way to help console me. Will my wallet ever forgive me?!

Thanks Jim. I'm kinda working my way through the albums on you tube, just playing a few tracks off of each album.

So far, I'd say Hank Mobley 'Soul Station' sounds about right for him. I liked the Oliver Nelson and Lee Morgan albums, but from the few tracks I played, I don't think he'd like them as much as me.

He's a tenor sax man, loves a well played sax, I wouldn't say he likes it soulful, but definitely melodic, uptempo, with a bit of a swing to it. He does like trad jazz, and big bands, but he's already got tons of that already, so I was hoping to get some real corkers that he probably doesn't know. I'm still listening to the Hank Mobley album, really sounds right for him.

I'll keep working through the list, if anything else grabs me, I'll let you know.

PS. I'm gonna have to buy that Oliver Nelson album for myself, money, or no money.

Thanks Jim

Some good ones there, I can suggest a few that he may not have:

Art Pepper - Meets the Rythem Section

Zoot Sims - and the Gershwin Brothers

Dexter Gordon - Our Man in Paris, Doin' Allright and One Flight Up.

Ben Webster - Soulville, Gentle Ben, Ben and Sweets.

Most of those are earlier than the ones above, not quite so hard more like Hank Mobley, all saxophone, not sure of avaibility on vinyl. Plenty of trios of course, maybe something special like a box set, like
The Complete Village Vanguard Recordings, 1961 [VINYL] Box set Bill Evans Trio
I assume he has albums like Sony Rollins - Saxophone Collosus and Tenor Madness and Cannonball Adderley - Somethin' Else? Classic albums.

I went into HMV today and bought my first new records from a real shop since I bought Queen Greatest Hits 2 from the same place in November 1991. Though I didn't buy anything to increase the mean average age of my mainly-elderly music collection: Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust and Hotel California. And if I hadn't been outvoted by the other three members of the household who are sitting watching crappy Eurovision shite, I'd probably be listening to one of them now.

You have to treat it as a comedy show, Major, though it's never that funny. Weirdly, Georgia had quite a good song, though the audience didn't seem to like it very much, and I'm sure it'll come close to last. The UK entry was quite a catchy pop song, but again, it has no chance of winning.

Yeah I fell out of it when it became all about politics and nothing about voting for your favourite piece of disposable pop music

You certainly don't have to convince me that it's total ****, and completely corrupt, I know, but I have to watch it every year. Me and my wife like giving marks out of ten for each act, knowing full well, that the one we think is actually ok, will probably finish last. The Georgia entry was quite a good Indie song, but some of the crowd seemed to be booing it. Honestly, would anyone care if the terrorists targeted Eurovision? *wink*

It's looking like Australia are going to win Eurovision; that's Australia, not Austria. *dash1*

I'm new to this new vinyl stuff as all my collection goes back 30+ years and stopped buying (old) new around 1991 as I lept over to cd. Of course I have bought old vinyl since at charity shops ( who now seem to overprice terrible condition copies) and boot sales.

New vinyl so far: Magical Mystery Tour , Can - Tago Mago, Neu 2 (black cover) and all sound good to me but the Beatles album did have quite a bit of dirt and some crackle brand new. I believe Dire Straigts - Love Over Gold is supposed to be exceptioanl on vinyl but not sure about the new version.

I am still wary of buying new pressings as I believe some are far worse than the originals. Tubular Bells for instance which is fine as I have a few different vinyl copies in various issues.

Is there a good website that gives a decent rati g to new vinyl ?

BTW - why do I have to fill out a verification code everytime I modify a post here ? It's so tedious.

I don't know of one. I would like to find one, the equivalent of blu-ray.com. I was brought to this forum originally by the 'Praise or shame your new vinyl' thread, but that seemed to fall out of use. If you can activate it again, that would be great! I tried once, but it didn't catch on.

The Hoffman forum can be useful for seeking out the best versions of albums but it does run on a bit sometimes, a bit like cables on here, but for older albums is a good place to go. Amazon reviews also worth a look for checking if the vinyl version is any good. Also check youtube there are some serious vinyl fans on there that do video reviews of their new vinyl and they don't pull punches, even some of the MoFi versions get slated. Problem is there are a lot of variables. Some hifi mags do reviews based on music and sound quality but the choice is rather limited.

I decided to buy CDs in the end, as I think he probably prefers them to records these days, and that's where the value is.

Thanks for the recommendations, Jim, some of the albums you recommended are included in these sets.

I bought these 3 sets of 8 albums for a total of £25:

Cannonball Adderley

Hank Mobley

Sonny Rollins

Thanks Jim, I think he will. I was a little concerned by them being digitally remastered, but he's going deaf, and he uses a god awful all in one system, so he'll never notice if they sound sh*t.

You can't go wrong with a bit of Cannonball in my opinion.

I'd be interesting to know what the transfer quality is like for those sets. Have they been properly remastered from original tapes, and do they sound really good? If so, they look pretty good value.
