Someone has dumped their collection of Genesis and Phil Collins records at a local charity shop, so I picked up 6 Genesis (Peter Gabriel era) records. Looks like they've been kept in a loft so need a good wash. Guess what I'm doing later on?!

Must have been gpi, and he's traded them in for some records that aren't Rock, Prog Rock or Boogie Rock. *biggrin*

Called to Elsecar Heritage Centre on my way home, as there's a used record shop called Vinyl Tap there.

Bought myself 2 ZZ Top records, 8 quid each, a queensryche album for a fiver and the best find was Carcass Swansong on blue vinyl for 15 quid. He charged me £30 for the lot.

After that, we went looking around the antique stalls and found another ZZ Top album, £4 , and Paul Simon, Graceland for £4 too.

So, a cracking day all in all. And a big hole in the wallet!

in mint condition. I think it's an unoffical release from 2007, clear vinyl, single LP version, EU produced, Epic/Sony BMG... strugging to locate it on Discogs, matching barcodes suggest black vinyl where stated.

It sounds fantastic though. Just wondering are these unoffical releases pirated copies in short, lesser in quality than originals? Sorry if it sounds like a foolish question but it's so hard to know when buying second hand exactly what you're getting...

I bought an unofficial release of Beck - Mutations.

I got burned: the sound quality was shocking.

I threw it in the bin.

Learned a lesson there, I did.

No more unofficial releases.

This is my point exactly. I buy mainly new generally on Amazon/Ebay. However I purchased this copy of Ten in a well known 2nd hand store locally. It was only after checking on Discogs that I became aware that 'Unoffical' releases exist. It looks, and in this case sounds like the real deal. They released 'Coke bottle' clear editions of this but they were double disc editions and I was unable to locate single disc clear (similar to my Offical Canadian version of the Best of the Animals LP) editions. You cannot tell visably that it is any different from an offically endorsed item.

Unless the bootlegger has access to the original master tapes or master disc, unofficial releases are likely to be mastered from a source such as the CD release. Therefore they're unlikely to be as good as the official release.

Again, unless the bootlegger had access to the original print plates, the artwork is likely to be photo-reproduced. This tends to mean that all elements are reproduced as half-tones (reduced to coloured dots). Things such as bar codes can look slightly blurred, and you'll see the dots through a magnifying glass. (See Joy Division Central, which gives comprehensive guides to telling bootlegs of their rarer releases apart from the originals.

seems to be a veritable minefield, especially if buying out and about and on the fly... 28 vinyl versions of Pearl Jam Ten alone, not including the picture disc currently doing the rounds...

Oh well I suppose I'll have to get the Redux version now... any old excuse! ;-)

It's a great resource, but watch out because you will end up spending money!

Apart from one second hand record all of my purchases have been brand new records from Amazon.

The Wedding Present : Seamonsters

Love this album and until today only ever owned it on ceedee. Disappointing trip to my local (and only) record shop - lots of money to spend but nothing there apart from the above that floated my boat. I'm starting to favour buying new from HMV ffs

An album I've owned for some time (atleast 10 years), and never played, though I did hear it around the time it was released.

I'm playing it now. *yes3*

Andre Previn / LSO - Prokofiev, Satie, Mendelsson, Vaughan Williams, Rimsky-Korsakov, Strauss, Uncle Tom Cobley...

Handel - Water / Fireworks - Academy of Ancient Music / Christopher Hogwood

Tchaikovsky - Little Russian Symphony - USSR State Symphony Orch / Boris Khaikin

Schubert - Beruhmte Leider - Munchner Philharmoniker / Hermann Prey

A quid each in charity shops, all in very nice nick and not even needing a clean up...

Had a right moan in there yesterday. The display racks are terrible, impossible to thumb your way through their selection, This for me is a fundametal part of the enjoyment of vinyl. The space generally being too small and tight within the racks, records getting twisted and bent beyond measure. I was assured by the manager that the company are planning new ways to display vinyl due to its surge in popularity. And he added that they've a new selection of turntables on offer. I was showed a pile of Crosley's, shook my head and walked out...

Offically I'm now a vinyl snob. ;-)
