Charity shop in Farnham yesterday - has a stack of 12" singles.

Was amazed to find a pristine copy of Don Henley's "Boys of Summer" for £2 - always wanted to own that.

your life is complete pmsl

This is hi-fi. Life is never complete. There's always more money that can be spent ;)

I was warned about this when I decided to get back into this particular hobby.

I go through phases of buying vinyl - bought a few reissues recently (carefuly researched though) but cant beat buying 2nd hand records, getting them home, quick clean, new anti stat sleeve then lowering that stylus down then sitting back to enjoy - you just dont get that with CD, best of all the CD has nothing on the SQ.........but as we know thats open to debate

Is it? People are still "debating" that? (grins manically)

For about £20 I got a stack of 12" singles all of which except one are pristine including: 49ers - Touch Me (never owned that before) and The KLF - Justified and Ancient (good fun), plus that Don Henley one and others. They weren't that cheap back in the day, when I used to spend £50 a week on 12" singles in HMV Oxford Circus every Monday after work.

I'll need to buy another one of those metal record boxes soon. The left hand side of our living room is basically blocked off with those all the way along the wall. I have a tolerant partner.

get yourself to ikea and buy the Kallax storage shelving, those record boxes must look hideous - i still have all my 12" dance music too, but its not really me anymore Ive played a few and to be honest they dont sound anything special on a decent hifi rig, remember how dance music is produced its all samples and drum machines and digital synths.

Those shelving units look good - thanks for the tip :)

Quite agree on the SQ, though where an effort has been made (e.g. a synthesised "soundstage" and good use of effects), and even though the music is entirely electronic, they can sound great.

A few examples that spring to mind are Mark Moore's efforts, e.g. "Theme From S-Express", the Q-sound style effects on Qattara's "The Truth", and the banging bassline and separation on the Tino Maas mix of Southside Spinners' "Luvstruck".

Got back from Amsterdam last night. I visited quite a few record shops and market stalls, but ultimately returned home with no additions to my record collection.

Why? Well, I hardly saw anything that was on my 'to buy' list, and anything I did find was either over-priced, or in poorer condition than I would have liked.

Concerto was a massive shop, excellent for reissues, and not bad for used vinyl. They also have tons of CDs, DVDs etc. Definitely worth a visit if you ever go to Amsterdam. http://concerto.amsterdam/en

Wax Well is quite a small shop, but it's all used vinyl, pricey, but there are some great records in there, and the condition of them is great. You'll need a lot of time though, and I didn't have too much of that. http://www.waxwell.com/

There was a great market with 3 or 4 record stalls, but be careful, as one of them was selling mainly bootlegs, and the lady complained when I started opening the sleeves to look at the vinyl. 'They are all new' she said, so considering some of them were in worn, original sleeves, that was my cue to walk away.

So, does the guy that looks like Tony DiBart with the weird hand still work in Kadinsky's? Do spill the beans.

;)

bit of a letdown BBB - was expecting you to come back with loads of 70s rare krautrock lps lol

I was thinking he'd pick up some Dutch classics like a first press of 'Una Paloma Blanca' by the George Baker Selection.

Bought my first record for a while today - 'Blood' by Lianne Le Havas, which came out last month. [puts on cod Dutch accent] Is super-funky!

I had to look up Kadinsky's and Tony DiBart, so as you can probably guess, I have no idea. *smile*

It was just hard to find any kind of bargain, even on the market stalls. I did find a copy of a Shocking Blue album which I was looking for, and at a decent price, but the sleeve was tatty, and the record even tattier.

There's always next time.

Hang on a cotton-pickin minute, I thought you said you couldn't stand Bryan Ferry's voice?

When?

I directed you to a Roxy tune, which you said was alright, but that you couldn't stand his voice?

When? *biggrin*

Well I don't bloody know do I! So, do you like his voice? *biggrin*

You tried to find it for about 20 to 30 minutes, then gave up, didn't you? *biggrin*

To answer your question, I both like and dislike his voice, but the reason I bought it is, I like buying records. and for 80p, why not?
