I may be returning to that shop tomorrow for a more thorough look.

Hmm, can I come?

I'm hoping to make my first trip to the second-hand shop which opened last year in a nearby city. Let's hope there are some standout bargains to be had there.

Bought a couple of records on the net in the last week:

Jackie Mittoo & The Soul Brothers - Last Train To Skaville

Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Live Rust

I'm off work with a bad back at the moment, but managed to get around a few charity/vintage shops today, with just the occasional squeal. Bought 7 records for £2, so not expecting too much, but some of them look really interesting, so I think I did quite well. I'm about to stick one or two of them on, but I'm hoping Jim or someone can throw a little light on them too.

Dave Lee - Jazz Improvisations Of Our Man Crichton

Jazz Hip Trio - Jazz In Relief

Original Soundtrack/Quincy Jones - The Slender Thread

Max Greger - This Is Max Greger

Joe Harriott & John Mayer Double Quintet - Indo-Jazz Fusions

Holst/Karajan/Vienna Philharmonic - The Planets

Bryan Ferry / Roxy Music - Ultimate Collection

I can't really help you BBB, but there's always Google. I do have copies of the two Indo-Jazz Suite/Fusion records by Joe Harriott and John Mayer and originals fetch quite a bit of money these days, but nothing serious...maybe £30 or £40 at a guess. I think they're nice records and not too challenging to listen too. Haven't played them in yonks; I'll go and find them today and give them a spin.

Thanks Jim

It's always great to get bargains, especially these total steals, but it's even better when you'd never heard of them, and when you play them, they put a smile of your face.

I cleaned them all yesterday, so will be giving some of them a full spin later, after only sampling them yesterday.

Well, I finally, almost a year to the day since it opened, managed to make it to the second-hand shop which opened in a nearby city. Health hasn't so far been good enough to go that far, but things are looking up. Widdled around loads of roads, including a toll bridge, only to find a note pinned up that they're closed this week. Nothing on their web page nor an answerphone message about that. Chuh. Oh well, I'll try to get back there soon.

Very annoying.

Well, I returned to the vintage shop today in search of further bargains, and although I came away with 8 records, they cost me a lot more, and aren't nearly as exciting. I did go to the charity shop I missed yesterday though, and I did rather well there. *biggrin*

Vintage shop 6 for £2:

Errol Garner - Concert By The Sea (CBS Orange Label, Mono)

Lennie Tristano - The New Tristano (Atlantic Special, Mono)

The Kop Choir - Liverpool Club's Own Football Sound

Neil Diamond - His 12 Greatest Hits

LSO/NPO/Frank Barber - John Williams' Symphonic Suites

Various - Rock Revival (Champs/James Brown/Chuck Berry etc.)

I also got:

Ravi Shankar - In San Francisco (£7)

Jacques Brel - Jacques Brel (£2)

Now to the charity shop buys (50p each):

Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin III (German reissue, gatefold sleeve wth spinning wheel)

Black Sabbath - Paranoid (NEMS Gatefold reissue)

Thin Lizzy - Bad Reputation

The Beatles - Rubber Soul (70s reissue - I think)

John Lennon - Collection

They also had a George Harrison treble album boxset with poster, but wanted their manager to check it's value before selling it. So, Rubber Soul, Led Zepp III and Paranoid were fine to sell for 50p, but not George's boxset. *wacko*

Firstly, BBB, well done for finding a mono 'Concert By The Sea'...great record.

Secondly, if the George Harrison box was 'All Things Must Pass' and it had the rather hard to come by poster then the shop assistant was right to wait for the manager's decision, annoying though that may be and I would have been furious!!! Why? Well, in mint or ex condition that can go for £120-£400...it would have to be a first pressing though to fetch £400. The poster is really difficult to find. Damn nuisance.

Yes, it was 'All Things Must Pass', but I can't be sure it was a first pressing, but the poster and records were close to mint, and the outside box wasn't bad at all.

I kind of wanted to push for it, but I'd done well anyway, and I thought if I do push for it and offer them more money, they'd get a bit suspicious, and not sell the others either.

I may go there tomorrow when the manager is there and see how much she wants for it, because it's one of those rare charity shops that sell things at reasonable prices.

I saw Danny's name mentioned and just had to comment. Fluent, melodic guitarist and a beautiful voice; he's prominent on 'Future Games', 'Bare Trees' and 'Kiln House', lesser-known Fleetwood Mac lps which are well worth hearing. 'Bare Trees' especially if only for his very moving 'Dust', a Rupert Brooke poem that he set to music. A troubled geezer, he was homeless and suffered from alcoholism following his time in Fleetwood Mac and a few solo records...I hope he's better now but details of his life are sketchy. My fave Danny with Fletwood Mac is 'Dragonfly' released as a single...there's a great live TOTP on youtube...he plays beautifully. Danny had an ethereal soul and no mistake. One of my heroes.

Bit of a problem. Bought Neil Young-Live Rust on Discogs, the records and sleeves all look as described, but when I went to play side one theis afternoon, I noticed the track that was playing wasn't the same as the label said, so I turned the record over, and the side one label is on both sides one and two.

So, do I contact the seller and return it for a refund, losing the return postage, or do I stick with it?

If it's the labels that are wrong, and the music is correct both sides, I'd keep it. I've got a few records like that, or with one label missing. I don't think it significantly affects value, and certainly not listening pleasure. If it has one side of music pressed into both sides of the vinyl, I'd return it.

Of course, if you have something like OCD, then you'll be in a cold sweat at this point, so return it anyway.

How the hell do you find a Led Zep record for 50p ??

My local Oxfam hasn't got a clue - found Cocteau Twins - heaven or Las Vegas for £2 then saw New Order - Blue Monday 12" for £25 - WTF who would pay £25 for that.

I hastily grasped Heaven or Las Vegas and ran out after paying

Ist pressings of Blue Monday are quite valuable, and have gone for as much as £28 on Discogs.

Now, Heaven Or Las Vegas for £2 is what I call a bargain, I paid £20+ for my less than mint copy, so I'd have been much happier with that than the Led Zep album for 50p.

i notice you buy a lot of soundtracks, any particular reason for this?
A number of reasons really. Firstly, I enjoy music. Secondly, I enjoy movies. Thirdly, I (usually) enjoy the soundtracks of the movies I enjoy. Admittedly, go back a couple of years and I didn't really have any soundtracks other than John Carpenter's The Thing - I now have about 80.

After watching Sinister again the other night, I'm quite looking forward to picking up the OST for that by Christopher Young, as it seemed rather good. Soundtracks - or more accurately, scores - are designed to enhance the feeling of what we see on screen, to produce tension, menace, or atmosphere, which can be more enjoyable than listening to a simple pop or rock song.

Sorry, I meant to respond to this ages ago, so suffice to say....fair enough *biggrin*

A few recent interesting ones have been Ex_Machina and Starry Eyes - the former being the guys from Portishead, and the latter sounding like a cross between John Carpenter and late 70s zombie movie soundtracks.
