Just had confirmation that my double LP copy of

GJ_2vinyl.jpg

has just arrived. I bought the 12" of Me, I Disconnect From You on RSD (largely because I just like Numan covers, wasn't expecting much as it was a reject from the album), got round to playing it last weekend, immediately went to the store to order the album! The 12" is STUNNING, one of the best sounding discs I've ever heard and just a fantastic track (the B-side is good as well), I don't understand why it never made the album.

Anyway, if the album sounds that good it'll be brilliant, picking it up on Saturday.

I didn't shop in Norwich on Record Store Day - once I saw the Eastern Daily Pres on-line pictures of queues snaking down the streets I stayed at home!

I buy discs I couldn't afford when I was in my youth, teens and twenties ('50s, '60s and '70s); I spent my money on gear - guitar strings leads (neither lasted long when gigging) and other nedful things to keep the band and the mobile disco going (lots of '45s). I'm currently on the track of some rarities.

I was - and still am - nvolved in the folk scene and I like turning up the lesser-known singers and bands who toured the clubs but rarely had a recording session. This week I tracked down the last of the three LPs by Derbyshire group Muckram Wakes (original members including the Waters and John Tams). After TAms moved on, they became The New Victory Band and I got that one this week as well.

I do vinyl valuation locally (anyone want some David Bowie or Eagles?) and I get to keep the discs I fancy in return for selling the rest on. These turn up the occasional nugget. I have the early 10" LPs from Cliff Richard (before The Drifters became The Shadows) and Billy Fury's 'The Sound of Fury (featuring Joe Brown on guatar - a prernnial entertainer who is still on the road). I also picked up "Singing to My Baby", an Eddie Cochran classic.

Amongst other things, I like to sing skat on my own and in a group: my choir uses this form in our pre-rehearsal warm-ups. I am keen to find the LP or CD on which Mel Torme sings a brilliant foil to George Shearing's piano on Gershwin's "Pick Yourself Up" in which they develop their theme into a Bachj-style fugue. Dooes anyone know the one I mean?

I'm on the prowl for Shirley Abicair's first three LPs made between 1960 and 1962. When I search, for rarities I often go to the BBC Record Library for titles, label and serial numbers but they do not have anything by her save for two 45rpm singles. Can anyone heop?.

Just ordered The Breeders - Pod original 4AD release.

Nice.

BBB I think you like your live music, if so, based on the above The Throwing Muses with 'Special Guest' Tanya Donelly are touring in September. Think she is opening, but may join them. Wish I could go but up in Scotland then, although we are there for the a Ryder Cup!

Not wanting to tease but I picked this up today, hopefully we'll listen to it later tonight, just watching the jazz progs on BBC4 then I think the missus wants to listen to a Lennon LP she picked up a few weeks ago and then hopefully we'll do a bit of nightclubbing!

One bonus, it comes with a code for "mp3 download", I've been downloading it for the last half hour or more, it's 3.6GIGAbytes! That ain't no mp3...

I have a couple of Grace Jones albums, Island Life and Warm Leatherette. Some of the production is excellent, really good sounding records.

Can I just point The_Lhc to this thread, as we're still awaiting an answer from him. :)

Went to do a bit of digging after work yesterday but i soon realised i was too tired to get really stuck in so i only had a brief look. Still left with The Rumour - Max (on the recommendation of Freddy and DIB) and Dexys Midnight Runners - Too-Rye-Ay

The Dexys one was a bit dusty which has put the idea of getting a Knosti back in my head, best deal on one? Suppose i'd need some antistatic sleeves as well, are the Nagaoka ones the best on the market? Know a few of you swear by them

I'm sure the Nagaoka sleeves are great, but I tend to buy poly-lined paper ones, do the job.

It's hard to get a great deal on the Knosti, but I can't recommend one enough.

Yesterday I received The Breeders - Pod record which I'd ordered, it was a little dusty, but looked in great shape. I played it, and it crackled and popped like a bowl of Rice Krispies. Took it off, spun it in the Knosti, then my trademark spin in the drill to remove all the fluid and debris left on it, then a 2 minute dry on the rack, then onto the turntable. Sounded like it should, no pops or crackles.

Well i popped out to grab some lunch and came back with 5 more records that need a clean so i've just ordered a Knosti from Conrad Electronics. With 100 antistatic sleeves it set me back £54 inc postage.

The records that tipped me over the edge were

Neil Young - Harvest

Simon & Garfunkel - Sound of Silence and Parsley, Sage...

Elton John - Goodbye Yellow Brick Rd

Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young - 4 Way Street

All £1 each, well chuffed with charity charity shop find.

I was trying to remember Conrad Electronics, best price on the net.

Great charity shop you have there, wish my local ones were as good.

I have a few tips for you.

1. Clean the dust off the records before you spin them in the Knosti

2. Give them plenty of spins in the liquid

3. Change the liquid every 3 or 4 records

4. The Knosti filter isn't great, so buy a small funnel and use coffee filters for a secondary filter.

5. Ignore the first 3 tips above if you use my method of cleaning, which involves using a drill to spin the records dry (I'll explain if you want me to). :)

....it was in fact 24/96 WAV files! :O The download also features 3 additional remixes/extended versions that they didn't try to squeeze on the vinyl (thankfully). You'd better be pretty damn keen on Pull Up To The Bumper though as you end up with 5 different version of it!

So, the jury's back, the verdict is fan-bloody-tastic! Worth every penny, buy without hesitation, excellent quality.
