Rondo Red is £300, the G1012GX about £180 less, so there's going to be a big difference in the buying price at least. From memory, the G1012 is a very rounded cartridge. Good bass, nice middle, detailed, but not too analytical treble. Warmer than the Audio Technica 440-MLa which is slightly less expensive (around £90) but which tracks like a winner and has a very analytical and detailed sound to it.

I understand - haven't heard it - that the Ortofon Rondo Red is also a warm sounding cartridge; it formed a part of the Project X-Pack which got you (I think) an Xperience deck and the Project Speed Box too, all for £650. That was a good deal, but given the apparent tonal similarities, the deck it's going on, I'd be inclined towards the Goldring 1012, or 1042 at the most (£165 or so) and put the remainder of the cash on some new LPs!
