I have decided to try and educate myself a little better on the history and practicalities of hi-fi audio and have started with a name I know well: Edgar Villchur ...

(Just bought this for a tenner inc. postage from the USA.)

Please suggest any books or papers or patents (with links if possible) by any other 'greats' from the history of our hobby.

The books by Douglas Self are regarded as classics, if you want to understand the engineering/science of hifi design.

The only HiFi books I have read are from 40-45 years ago and they discuss how to build your own amps and speakers; very common practise at the time from easily-available kits that were almost as common (if not more common) than ready-built units, especially speakers, less-so amps. It would scare most hifi enthusiasts these days, who think soldering up a custom interconnect is a specialist job.
