Im now in the process of demoing new speaker cable has anyone ever tried using one cable in one speaker one in another? Or can you even do this? Didnt know if i could demo them like this side by side in my speakers to see what i think produces the better sound. Thanks

Using both speaker cables at the same time in different channels would serve no purpose except to confuse you and I doubt even the most advanced of listeners could really tell what was going on in that situation.

Don't find that works at all for my Ears.

I always try one set, then the other. Also take account of burning in time if they are brand new.
I have found music develops with a more integrated, richer sound, so initially for instance it could start with a touch of forwardness to the treble.

Hope that helps

PS Have a listen to Kimber 4TC, or 8TC, think it would go very well with your system.

Hi ok thanks id read a couple of people who demoed it like that before but ill stick to the conventional way! I did see some 2nd hand 8tc but wasnt sure how much it was really worth so might look in to that further. Thanks

Be careful of speaker cable that's listed on ebay- especially from sellers in Hong Kong.... I was looking at getting some Kimber speaker cable at what looked like a bargain price.... thought I'd email the ebay link to Kimber HQ to see if they could confirm its authenticity, and they replied saying the cable is definitely fake and that they are facing a constant battle to keep on top of fake products being offered through ebay

Hi yes i saw the copied stuff on ebay saying KIMXXX 8tc or something like that. No this is second hand in the uk. Ive got a few different cables in mind to try now Kimber 8TC, Atlas Hyper 3.0, Chord Signature, odyssey and epic are on the list at the minute.

I have to agree that trying two different cables at the same time does not (to my ears at least) seem to work. I tried it the other day out of curiosity using s/h (from eBay) Van den Hul Teatrack Hybrid Biwire vs my original (1996) Cable Talk Talk 4.1 Biwires. I wondered whether there would be a readily discernible change in quality between left and right speakers. I may have been wanting to hear it, but maybe, just maybe, the VDH could have tightened up the bass (which is what I want). However, given the way a stereo CD track can switch between speakers, I have to say it was probably a waste of time trying it this way. Had to be tried though.

With all the fiddling behind the amp and the speakers that is involved, I have to say it is very difficult to detect any difference when you do a full swap between speaker cables unless it is a marked change. In the home environment, it takes too long to do the switch and then sit back and listen objectively.

I've now got the Cable Talk, the VDH and some QED Silver Anniversary XT to try out. Setting some time aside when the other half won't be breathing down my neck is not going to be easy! At the end of the day, I wonder if I will get a result worthy of the effort? Either way, two sets of cables will be headed towards eBay before too long - which ones is anyone's guess.

Now where did I put that bottle of snake oil..?

No, that won't work. The correct way to demo two cables at once is to splice equal lengths of the two cables together then hook them up. After extended listening determine if you prefer the first half of the songs or the second half. Problem solved!

That's assuming you're not listening to a prog CD track which will tend to be at least two different songs in one anyway!

Perhaps listening to the BBC Test Signal is the way forward? Anyone got a recording?

PS. As a relative newcomer, is 'silly season' an all year thing, or just restricted to April?

So far, nine volumes of it available here.

what are these meant to test for?

I'm here all year folks! Try the clams...

I don't think it's got anything to do with clams, I would hazard a guess at either too much sniffing of contact cleaning solutions or too much exposure to electronics emissions!

Not much I'm afraid - I made a daft suggestion that the BBC Test Signal (the one you used to hear at the end of transmission, if you're old enough) should be used for listening tests on the cables. Blame a certain person who suggested splicing cables and comparing the effects on two halves of a song!
