You have my sympathies, Charlie, and as Jim said, it's put my problems into context.

You've got my email address should you wish to contact me.

Is that a new pressing? Any ideas which LP I should go for..?
It was a first pressing from the late 90s/early 2000s. I'd go for an early pressing of the first album if I was you, I've had 2 or 3 copies over the years, and all played well.

Thanks Varga. I'll look out for that when I go to the record shop..

(Hoping you get the reference)

Not been listening to any records recently but wanted to send my best wishes to Charlie and Jim in their difficult circumstances. Really sorry to hear about how things are, and hope you find a way through them.

Thanks everyone.

Now I feel a little bit guilty for bringing a sombre air to this life-affirming thread.

Back to the music:

The Monsanto Years - Neil Young/Promise Of The Real

Tempest - Bob Dylan

Katy Lied - Steely Dan.

Latin Quarter - Modern Times

John Carpenter - Escape from New York 180g reissue

Lorde - Pure Heroine

Kate Bush - Ariel

I have the Thorens deck up and running again with a brand new Goldring stylus and it really is something to behold.

About 95% of my records are 12" singles. About 95% of those are electronic dance records.

But I did make a conscious decision to expand my horizons recently and found myself amazed by Pink Floyd's "The Wall" and enjoyed Jeff Wayne's Musical "War of the Worlds" over again.

I've also got into Eva Cassidy and Rickie Lee Jones. And Kate Bush.

I find myself strangely drawn to your selections.

Side 2 of Mike Oldfields 'Tubular Bells', my favourite side. I particularly like the Mandolin parts, they reach down to my soul.

And now... The Who - 'Quadrophenia'. A bit tatty now, but sounding great. As an aside I went to see a tribute act, 'Who's Next', and had a great time. I even ended up having a sing on the mic. Mind you, I was a bit worse for wear *biggrin*

Sorry about your woes Charlie.

If you like The Wall you need to hunt down Wish You Were Here

My favourite Floyd album.

Did you take your Thorens to HiFi Hangar? If so, any good?

See, I thought/still think The Wall is dreadful. Wish You Were Here however *good*

I have just fitted the replacement stylus - was reluctant to play too much with the worn one that was on there. It sounds great. But I have today dropped them an email to ask if they're interested in taking it on for some TLC and fine tuning. I keep trying to reply back to the thread about that, but everything I post is flagged as spam and so I had to give up in the end.

I have also inherited the "Wish You Were Here" LP in A1 condition - and couldn't resist playing a little; "Shine on You Crazy Diamond" was covered by a dance artist called DJ Dado and I had heard that (far from his best!), but what I have heard of the Pink Floyd LP so far is superb. So that will be played in full shortly.

Yes give it a listen, loud in the dark is best.

I love dance music. Especially trance.

I must be getting old because I can't be bothered keep getting up and down to swap 12" singles over. Albums last much longer :)

Do you like Genesis? There is a track called Sacred Cycles by Pete Lazonby that makes heavy use of a sample from The Fountain of Salmacis. Worth a listen.

Hope it doesn't sound anything like that abysmal scissor sisters version?

Nope, it's the 'proper' version, solo and all. I have to admit, the first time I heard the SS version, I thought it was a joke. Mind you, I quite like some of their tunes.
