Brilliant. Try Lemony Snicket and Salton Sea which are a similar style.

Chris, I had got the impression you had listened to Anekdoten on Spotify.

Nah. I tend to go to Youtube to listen to anything you or others recommend. DaveH has invited me onto Spotify now though, so I can use that in future.

First off from Poland, SSB. Sounding like a jazzed up Tangerine Dream it is electronica with fast drums and occasional Adrian Belew sounding vocals. Then from the US Bigelf and 'Hex'. Heavy metal with sounds from glam rock David Bowie, Pink Floyd and if you like Wolfmother or Black Sabbath you should like this.

Back in the UK for a change and Oceansize with 'Frames'. Think Mogwei meets Porcupine Tree, moody and powerful. Then more Cinematic Orchestra and 'Man with a movie camera'. Mesmeric, soulfull, catchy, delightful jazz prog. The final track 'All things' is fabulous.

Explosions in the Sky 'All of a sudden I miss everyone', which is dramatic, moody, intense hard rock instrumental in the style of Mogwei. Then Fermata and 'Only Ghosts Remain'. I thought I had found some Slovakian prog rock, but this is an American folk band of the same name. Not my usual fair, but it is a very well recorded, accoustic album with fabulous male/female vocals.

Jaga Jazzist, 'Magazine'. Prog jazz with the last two tracks being a bit different; one set to drum n' bass and then a total mad soundscape. Then more The Cinematic Orchestra, who dare I say it are my new favourite band. The album is Ma Fleur and the opening 'To Build a Home' is packed full of emotion and is stunning.

Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful.......the sound track to the documentary 'The Crimson Wing - Mystery of the Flamingos' by The Cinematic Orchestra and The London Metropolitan Orchestra. If you like Thomas Newman or Philip Glass or any classical and soundtrack music or even if you just like music, try this............

Australia's Cosmic Nomads with 'Vultress'. The style is heavy metal based around the hammond organ played like Jon Lord or Keith Emerson. It would actually be really good but for the really low key, dull vocals. I need an Ian Gillan scream or the soaring vocals of Greg Lake to make this work, but I suppose that would be just too derivative. My foot is still tapping.....

Sex Pistols - `Never Mind The Bollocks` (vinyl) I was a late starter with punk but seeing as I was the biggest Abba fan at my school it surprised a few when I started collecting singles by the Sex Pistols and X-Ray Spex. It took six continous plays on one of the rides at the local fair ground of `Pretty Vacant` to do the trick. Still one of my favourite intros of all time.

Barry Manilow - `Tryin` To Get The Feeling` (vinyl) It`s been too long since I played some Barry. Got this in a box set of three of his early albums. Includes the wonderful `I Write The Songs` which this one of course he didn`t but I don`t care because I think he performs it so well and it does sound so much like a Manilow composition don`t you think?

Barclay James Harvest - `Baby James Harvest` (cd remastered with bonus tracks) Mmnnn...when I saw Big Chris`s thread about bands/artists you think are great but have made a bad album this one did actually spring to mind which is why I`ve just given it another listen before possibly doing something I might later regret. Listening to it again I don`t think that it`s quite as bad as I remember. What goes against it is that the other albums the band released either side of this one were so good and that makes it sound worse than it probably is. Whilst saying that I`m a believer that you should try to listen to an album without comparing so I should practice what I preach a little more often I suppose.
