Oh Yeah!

Brings the memories flooding back of those short-lived,but heady days up North,at the turn of the '70's & '80's,when the 2-Tone led Ska & Reggae revival was in full-swing.Helping to cast some well needed Carribean-tinged sunshine into our lives during those bleak recession-bitten times.

Tunes like Bad Manner's:'Lip up fatty' & 'Special Brew'.The Beat's:'Can't get used to losing you','Hands off she's mine','Mirror in the bathroom','Too nice to talk to' & 'Whine an' Grine/Stand down Magaret'.Eddy Grant's:'I don't wanna dance','Electric avenue' & 'Living on the front-line'.The Selecter's:'James Bond','On my radio' & 'Three minute hero'.The Special's:'A message to you Rudy','Gangsters','Ghost Town' & 'Too much, too young' were all part of the sound track to my early teens.

Someone fetch me m' Farahs 'n' Hush-Puppies!

BABUR.

Fabulous in every respect prog albums from Renaissance and Pentangle. The stand out for Renaissance is the vocals of Annie Haslam, who has a Californian Mamas and Papas style. The orchestration and scale of the music is phenominal. Pentanles stand out is the superb guitar work. The quality of the recording is stunning.

First full day with the new set-up has consisted of:

Neil Young - Greatest Hits
Fleetwood Mac - The Very Best Of (2CD)
Steve Earle - Townes
Abba - Ring Ring
Tchaikovsky - Romeo & Juliet Fantasy Overture (Pappano)
David Bowie - The Very Best Of
Mendelssohn - Discoveries (Chailly)
Barclay James Harvest - Time Honoured Ghosts
Richard Thompson - Mock Tudor

On the subject of Fleetwood Mac, we saw them live on Tuesday evening and they were superb. A fantastic evening of music making.

Judas Priest - `Rocka Rolla` (vinyl) A lot has been said about this album not ranking amongst Priests finest. Maybe not but bearing in mind it was the bands first effort and the production wasn`t quite what it might have been I still think this is worth having and listening to it again it`s not too difficult to see that great things were just around the corner.

Bread - `Essential` (cd) David Gates has such a fantastic voice. Standout tracks are too many to mention.

Magnum - `Vigilante` (vinyl) Great album from one of Birminghams finest! Standout tracks - `Vigilante`, `Need A Lot Of Love`, `Midnight` and the anthemic `When The World Comes Down On You`. Word of warning, the cd version isn`t bad but the vinyl sounds better if you can find a copy.

Vitalic - Flashmob

Not everyones cup of tea but an awesome example of dirty electro techno. Not to be missed if you're into any form of dance music. So many layers, completely off key super sinister sounding tracks, I can't recommend it enough

Germany's Triumvirat, who on 'Pompeii' are way too derivative of ELP's stadium prog pomp sound to be of any interest. Far more original, though with a trade mark sound is Trey Gunn and Robert Fripp with 'The Repercussions of Angelic Behavouir'. Gunns, rambling, watery bass sound with screaming Frippertronics makes for a hard edge to this instrumental album. It is industrial prog and one for hard core later King Crimson fans.

Secret Machines 'Ten Silver Drops', O.S.I 'Blood' and Oceansize 'Effloresece', three superb metal/rock albums. All are full of spine tingling riffs, brilliant hooks, rhthyms and beats. The musicianship and recording is all top drawer.

Shudder To Think - Pony Express Record (1994, Big Cat)

One time label mates with Fugazi, at the time they never got the recognition they deserved.
Their squiffy rock is for me best represented on this album.
