with the new panasonics out there is no 46 in the plasma range (gt50) and my viewing distance is 2.5 m. 42" is ok and could have gotten away with 46" but is 50" too big ? are the improvements in screens meaning you can get closer to a bigger tv or will there be issues ??

Depends on your main source really. Hi-def material should be okay at that distance, but you may find SD material (i.e. most "normal" TV channels, DVDs etc.) suffers from being that close to a 50" screen.

Best bet would be to go to a shop with a measuring tape so you can see for yourself - ideally go to one with a proper demo room so you can phone them in advance, book a session and ask them move the sofa to that distance and have natural lighting and appropriate SD and HD material ready for you to demo.
