I'm looking for a bit of help. I went to a viewing at a local auction earlier, and there was a box full of DVDs, but not your usual rubbish, lots of foreign language and obscure films, but I'm just wondering whether to bid, and how much.

Titles included:

Kagemusha

Ran

L'Avventura

Sisters

The Virgin Spring

Contempt

Le Samourai

L'Eclisse

Maitresse

Salvatore Giuliano

Suspiria

Louis Malle (Box Set Volume 1)

3 Women

Wild Strawberries

Jules And Jim

Blue Sunshine

Short Night Of Glass Dolls

Cries And Whispers

The Bloodstained Shadow

The Cross And Switchblade

There's loads and loads more, easily over 100 in total, and from what I saw, hardly and duffers. I checked the condition of the some of the discs, and they seemed in perfect condition, though some of the more fragile covers on box sets etc, were a little marked and worn.

Quite a few of the titles were Criterion Collection Region 1 DVDs.

I was thinking of bidding around £50, what do you think?

Thanks Ben. I'm hoping Strapped will be around later to advise, as I'm very tempted.

Now which film is it?

Can't tell you that ;) I was mulling over two for my third choice and was probably coming down on the side of the one on your list.

I have a feeling I know which one, but I'll wait and see. I'll let you know if I was right.

Ooh, exiting game! :) If I had to out money on it I'd say you've got it right but I'm going to have a side bet on which one I think you've picked. (This could go on a while.)

Let's put a grand on it, I promise not to lie just to win the money. :shifty:

BBB, you say many of the DVDs are Criterion releases.

I assume you can play Region 1 DVDs. (All Criterion titles are Region locked, which has been a source of much annoyance for me.)

There are many great titles listed. It's quite an eclectic selection, too, from the French New Wave, to Giallo, to late Kurosawa, to quality Bergman...

If you've not seen The Virgin Spring, I recommend a double feature with Last House on the Left (the Wes Craven version).

Fifty pence a film seems a conservative bid to me. Criterion DVDs still sell for a fair amount.

Thanks Strapped.

I'll can convert my BDP to multi-region for about £12, so if I win the auction, I'll probably do this.

I've looked at the pictures I took of the dvds on my phone, and I think there's about 70 (not over 100), including 7 or 8 box sets. I think £50 as an absolute max is fair enough, though I get very twitchy when the bidding starts.

I won the auction for £38 including all the auction fees.

Ctiterion Collection dvds:

The Virgin Spring, Naked Lunch (2 disc), Salvatore Giuliano (2 disc), Maitresse, L'Eclisse (2 disc), Contempt (2 disc), Le Samourai, Naked Kiss, The Leopard (3 disc), The Man Who Fell To Earth (2 disc), Suspiria (3 disc), The Lost Honour Of Katharina Blum, Wild Strawberries, Diabolique, The Seventh Seal, 3 Women, Jules And Jim (2 disc), 8 1/2 (2 disc), Ingmar Bergman Box (Through A Glass Darkly/Winter Light/ The Silence/Ingmar Bergman Makes A Movie), Seven Samurai, Sisters, L'Avventura (2 disc), Kagemusha (2 disc), Ran (2 disc), Cries And Whispers, Eyes Without A Face, The Last Temptation Of Christ

And the non-Criterion Collection films:

Hundra (2 disc), La Dolce Vita (2 disc), Pink Floyd-The Wall, Chintown, Tarzan Collection (Box Set of 6 films), Opera (2 disc), The Towering Inferno, The Wild Bunch (2 disc), Four Brothers, Yankee Doodle Dandy (2 disc),Boogie Nights (2 disc), McLintock, Haunting, All The President's Men (2 disc), House Of Bamboo, The Dark Corner, The High And The Mighty (2 disc), The Giallo Collection (4 film box set), Louis Malle (4 film Box set), Blue Sunshine (2 disc), Sherrybaby, Wild At Heart, Rose Of Washington Square, Double Indemnity, Lost In Translation, The Sting (2 disc), Match point, Hollywoodland, Swingers, The Gospel Of John, A History Of Violence, 21 Grams, 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea (2 disc), Network (2 disc), Dressed To Kill, Whirlpool, Into The Night, Laura, Garden State, The Cross And The Switchblade

Not sure how many that is in total, and there's definitely some less than good films, but they are well outnumbered by some great films and box sets.

Nice one :) There's some really good stuff there. Glad I don't have room for so many extra DVDs or I'd be jealous ;)

I haven't got room either Ben, and as much as I'd like to keep lots of them, some will have to go on eBay asap.

I just had one lady bidding against me, no-one else was at all interested, so could have been an even bigger bargain.

After a quick browse on Amazon, I spotted this:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Eyes-Without-Face-DVD-Blu-ray/dp/B00I5QVTIS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1394320959&sr=8-1&keywords=eyes+without+a+face

I've been waiting for a Region 2 BD release (with English subtitles) for years, so I guess I can hang in there until summer.

It wasn't listed for pre-order a week ago, so happy days!

By the way, I've invited David@FrankHarvey to become a new member of the club, hopefully he'll agree, as he watches more films than Barry Norman, so I think he'd be a good addition.

I never bought the film because the Region B DVD release costs a fortune, and is pretty poor quality, too.

Hopefully the BFI will give the transfer the attention it deserves. I bought the BFI release of The Devils, which was widely praised, but marred by digital noise and edge enhancement. It's still the best the film has looked on home video* (and it was never going to look stellar), but a touch disappointing.

In my experience BFI releases are variable in quality.

* It wasn't legally available in the UK before the BFI release.

Thanks, I've added it to my wish list. I've noticed a whole load of new releases available for preorder in the last week or two, lots of horror, especially Vincent Price. I've also added Victim, If... and An Inspector Calls.

Well spotted BBB. All those films, for approx the cost of one brand new box set.
