Hi All

I am new to the home cinema revolution so I am after some non shop biased advice please. Need to keep cost down and no subscriptions as we want to get rid of Virgin.

We watch films via normal DVD player and normal freeviewTV we don't want 3D.

I think we want a recorder to record free view films as part of the deal is we will ditch the Vigin box but I am struggling to work out about youview???. Its a smallish room 15 foot by 16 and bit more into bay window.

I may want to join love film or similar over the web for when the nights get shorter, can I do this though the smart TV and get youview?

My laptop has HDMI output so is this useful as a source?

I am happy running cables about the room.

Overal all budget is about £900

I am not allow a full surround system it needs to be sound bar so I like this because of the small sized sub not allowed a big box

and if I have understood youview corrrectly I need ones of these?

Lots of questions I know, sorry, theres so many options now its hard to know where to start.....

Thanks in advance.

Lot of questions there , there is a lot of choice in the low to mid range tv market ,I know u have a budget of 900 but I would get yourself a decent tv first ,u don't have to spend a fortune on a tv but since its the main part of your home cinema I would get that sorted first, blu ray/DVD players ,cheap ish soundbars and set top boxes can be picked up for 100-200 quid each.

Stretch your tv budget as far as u can then worry about the other stuff .

Had a wee look about

tv - Panasonic txp42st30 £550

blu ray/ DVD player - panasonic bdp 220 - £150 ish

soundbar - Yamaha yas101 -£169

plus a couple of audio quest pearl Hdmi cables to tie things together .

Your set top box could be bought in a month or so

Thanks for this.

I agree I'll go with a better spec telly. Not interested in 3d so I'll spend 550 ish on a 42inch SMART TV.

Part of my negaotiation was loosing the virgin box so I'll have to get the youview PVR now £220 for the recordings

The sound bar I reckon YAS101 150 so thats 920 and I'll buy the Yamaha sub later.

I can probably "borrow" HDMI leads from work

How does this all look?

Looks good to me :) nice tv and its and led which for the size of the room if there is lots of natural light should give u a nice bright picture.as for the 3d u wouldnt really get the real effect of it with a 42inch screen a lot of guys reckon 65 inch is the minimum.

As for your yamaha soundbar i think it has a sub built into it .i may be wrong but i dont think u can attach an external sub

Thanks to Flying wasp for all the help.

Off on hols next week so will get TV and PVR when I return. I'll do a with a quick check nothing else is a better option. They try and work out the cableing options. I do soem more sounds bar howework as I get this in a motnh or two.......The LG is very tempting reviewed here but I really need to be able to keep the sub small and mounted with the other components hence the Yamaha option. The low hight of the sub makes it very easy to site.

Thanks again.
