I have managed to pick up some fairly heavy weight speaker stands but unfortunately there are no spikes present.

There is a hole drilled in each corner of the base ready for spikes or feet, but on looking for spikes they quote the "M" number, eg M8, M6.

Does anyone know what the M stands for? I believe it means Metric, and is the number the thread size?

Searches on the internet can prove tricky, as there are several differing opinions on the subject.

Any clarification on this matter would be good, thanks

Differing opinions on thread sizes??? If u dont know if yr threads are m6 or m8 then some bolts are marked as such. Try a couple. If they fit but dont know the size pop into b&q and compare the threads. Else buy one of each to see which fits. Or .....
I assume the stands have threads and not just holes else u will need additional nuts and an adequately long thread
