ok well as i set up my new sony bdve300 last night. and did the calibration mic thing. its telling me that the sub, centre and left front are minus something or other, whereas the rest are normal. question is, is that normal, or should i ignore the auto calibration and make them all at least not a minus db level?

if this sounds confusing, i a newbie to db calibration and all that jazz.

It's pretty normal for the db levels to differ, for each speaker. The auto setup will be trying to give you an even sound field at the point where you placed the mic. Unless you live in a completely square room, with all the 4 Walls reflecting sound exactly the same and your seating position slap bang in the centre of the room the db levels are unlikely to be the same.

However, saying that, if it does not sound right to you by all means play Round with the db levels, you could even get a sound level meter and do it properly yourself.
