Hi all

Just wondering if anyone can help me on here. Want to upgrade a basic HiFi system we have in our sports club.

Currently consists of a Denon (can't remember the exact model number) amp thats rated at approx 40 x 40 RMS in 8 ohms. This is running 4 JPW mini monitors, and intended to be a 'punchy' background music system.

However! We've had it turned up on near full volume for some 'rock nights' where we blast out some classics from the 80s. Unfortunately this has resulted in me 'frying' the tweeters in one of those pairs. Unsure whether they've been over driven, or whether the amp has been over driven and 'clipped' the sound resulting in the tweeters being damaged.

But I'd like to replace the lot really for a more versatile system. Something that can act as background, and on the odd occassion, something midway between background and a proper 'disco' setup.

I know most places use 100V line gear, but I really want to do this on a budget, and there will only be 4 speakers max.

In short, need a robust, powerful amp where out and out quality isnt the ultimate aim. And 4 speakers that are more 'meaty' than the JPW mini monitors. Did used to have a meaty Kenwood 5090 that was 90+90 RMS in 8, but sold it on. Something like that would be ideal. Am probably looking at used gear.

Thanks for any advice!

How about the Teac AR-650, just out and replaces the 610 - it's a 90wpc amp, decent build and probably what you're after. Partner it with sensitive speakers and it'll blow the clubhouse windows out. Never heard it, but it'll do the job you need it to and at £219 from Superfi, lies within your budget too. Also, if you don't like it, Superfi will accept a return within 7 days of receipt of the amp. Check if it will run both sets of speakers together (think it will if you select both A&B, but not sure).

Edit: Superfi also have the Yamaha AX497 (£270) and Harman Kardon's HK980 amp (£280 but I think Richer Sounds are doing this one for £249, deals to be had so shop around) and these are 85wpc and both are switchable and can run both sets at once in both cases. The HK amp definitely does.

HK 980 here: http://www.superfi.co.uk/index.cfm/page/moreinfo.cfm/Product_ID/5356

Second hand but should do fine (120w)

Thanks for the answers.

Interesting you mention the TEAC. I do actually have in my potentional possession a Teac ar-600

http://www.avland.co.uk/teac/ar600/ar600.htm

Presume this is more or less has similair guts to the 610 and 650s?

And any recommendations for speakers that will run at a high level for prolonged periods off of this? Bearing in mind I will want to run 4x speakers. Do JPW make a 'next model up' from the mini monitor?

What about some jbl controll 1's?

Seen them used in loads of places, very sensitive speakers, and can handle 300watts, I had a pair myself quite surprising bass from something so small 80-20khz, potent sounding little speakers. Probably not as good quality as the jpw's but would suit your instalation.

Come with wall brackets aswell
