I would go with something from Audio Note like the AX2 or AN-K, depending on budget......you have to make the most of those 12W.

BTW. Great choice of amp.

max budget £1000

That would put the AN-K out of budget:
http://www.audioflair.co.uk/products-page/loudspeakers/audio-note-ax-2-entry-level-bookshelf-nearfield-speaker/

or small Floorstander:
http://www.audioflair.co.uk/products-page/loudspeakers/audio-note-az-2-entry-level-performer/

Just in case (AN-K)*:

*My choice. >)

thanks for the links :) the an-k is indeed very nice. What do you think of the Aurum Cantus leisure 2's? can we get these in the uk?

Not a clue as I've never heard of them.
I've only just heard of them from trawling the Internet :)...just a wildcard. Would a speaker of 90db be sensitive enough to make the most of the amp? or would I need to be looking at something more sensitive? the an-k is unfortunately way over my budget :-(

I believe all Audio Note speakers are designed to be used for low powered amps, but the person to speak to is Martin Grenall (martin.grenall@audionote.com), who is very helpful and knows his stuff. I think they might be a safer bet.

90dB is a good sensitivity, but is not necessarily a good indicator. My Kef Refs have a 90 dB sensitivity, but an impedance that drops to 3.2 Ohms, which means your amp would turn itsef inside out to power them, and still not manage convincingly.

I was going to suggest Audio note too, although I haven't heard them but they are always paired with low powered tube amps. You can check out Planet Duevels, I felt they sounded sensational with a 12 watt leben amplifier, I believe you can get them for 749 pounds...I love the look of them.

Also check out Chario speakers, their entire range is tube friendly I believe. Heard them with the puny 4 watt Mini-watt amplifier and they went decently loud in a small room. Whether you like the sound quality is another matter.

hmmmm....interesting. the planet duevels are not bookshelf though but are the omni directional which would mean placement could be pretty much anywhere- am I correct in saying this? they look great though and a real conversational piece :) price is very attractive too. I will check the other brands you have mentioned. Thank you!

Icon Audio MFV 2s could be worth investigating gb. MFV (made for valves). Prolly be able to drive em off a sparrow f**t. Is your ticker dead set on the Unison ?.

Be wary of Omni directionals mate. House guests think they are posh ashtrays ;)

ha ha - good point about the ashtray mistake :) loving the flat at the moment and dead set on valve amplification. Not dead set on the unison (although its a front runner) open to more suggestions of course. On the speaker front it looks like the Audio note AX2 is a) inexpensive b) I like the simplicity c) they are made for valves d) I think they look great in white :)

I couldn't possibly afford anything on that website. Just answering your question regarding a UK dealer/distributor for Chario.
