I have just added a new centre speaker (3005SE) to my Kef 2005.2 package and makes a big improvement i just want to check to make sure that the crossovers are set ok in the receiver the sub is coming over quite boomy at times.

The satellites botton frequency is 80Hz so have set the amp crossover to this.

THe Centre's bottom frequency is 60Hz so i have set the crossover to this.

On the sub i have volume at 12 oclock and the crossover frequency to the max setting, the crossover in the amp is set to 100Hz

Any advice on sorting the booming on the sub would be great as i have always struggled to get the sub just right

Well your amp is doing the cross over @ 100 hz so that sounds fine.

It appears that it is more a question of level adjustment on the Sub.
I would reduce the volume in the Amps 'speaker menu' to the sub until you get to the point where it is heard ONLY when it should be and is in balance with music.

A common mistake is to have the setting too high.

Right, i used the auto setup on the amp i will tweak it down a bit, its ok in most places until there are lots of fast deep base section and it booms and muddies all together.

Hi

Been doing some reading on this subject recently and some consistent advice around various forums is to add 20hz to what the speaker specs quote i.e. in your case use at least 100hz for the sats and 80hz for the centre. Speakers dont tend to work at their best right at the bottom range of their specification and the sub would do a better job with low frequencies.

Personally i would also increase the crossover on the LFE channel to 120hz.

Problems with a booming sub could be related with the physical location of the sub or you could check the trim levels for the sub in the amp set-up.

If your amp has an auto set-up has this give reasonable results?

Lee.

Have to agree - I'd set the sub roll-off to 120Hz on the receiver, and the other speakers' low-end roll-off to the same value.

You could try with all these settings at 80Hz or 100Hz (if the receiver will let you), but I reckon the 120Hz setting will give you the best results.

ok i will give all of these settings a try and see how it sounds .... i guess its a bit of trial and error to see what gives the best results

I'm a little confused. I have KEF3005SE's and have the sub set to crossover at 120Hz on the amp(Denon 2309). I currently have the satellite speakers set to crossover at 80Hz. Should they also be set at 120Hz or something else?

Thanks.

Yes, also at 120Hz.

But you should also try my advice above to experiment with 80Hz and 100Hz settings across the board, if the receiver will let you, and see which you prefer.

I have been doing some testing with crossover and also with the Multi EQ / Dynamic EQ settings on the Denon 1909.

From what i can tell the sub booming was occuring when the Dynamic EQ stuff was turned on, when its on it attempts to make all the speaker levels the same and it overdoes the Bass and make it very boomy even at low volume levels.

So callibrated the system manually using an SPL meter, and then altered the Sub so that is was not dominating things. The balance is a lot better and i dont get booming any more.

I am still playing with the crossover settings but as yet the jury is out on which i prefer.

I'd have to agree with that my 806 gets very boomy with the eq turned on, my vm1's are set @ 70hz and my sub to 120hz.

turn the eq off and it sounds alot better with no extra boomy bass!

i think this sounds ok but now your all saying that the speakers should be set @ 120hz as well! will my vm1's and 77ds handle this?

i'm just trying to get the best from the system and willing to try anything! but not much knowledge into how hz work etc! its all new to me.

ajeffo, what DB level did you set your sub? I have the same problem with dynamic EQ when watching dvds/bluerays but its fine when watching regular tv.

cheers.

Currently after the manual calibration the sub i set at -5.5db .... which seems about right, bit i dont have the Multi-eq switch on (i found that it boosted the base too much and the high end too much and all sounded very unbalanced).

It may be different with you speakers as they are different.

With the auto Audessey set up i found that it set all the speakers db levels very high, so i used the SPL to balance them and tweaked the Sub manually until it blended in properly but still has oomph at the right places.

So no i play blu-ray and DVD's with all the eq stuff switched off and watch TV with the Dynamic EQ on ... i always have the Dynamic Volume switched off as its a bit artificial.

Hope that helps

Thanks.

I manually set the levels with an SPL too but not sure what level to have the sub because I have dynamic EQ turned on for everything. When I ran audyssey set up it sets the sub to around -8.5.

I think I need to carry on experimenting.

try turning the dynamic EQ off for the Blu-ray input and see what that is like, you can have it off for one channel and on for the rest if that works best for you
