Purpose of lug on stylus cartridge?

Hi there.
I've just retrieved a Sony PS-T33 turntable from our loft (been there 20 years). I've set the arm up to the correct weight (1.7g) but the sound isn't great. I've noticed that the small plastic lug (circled on photo) rests on the record. Should it be doing this? I would have thought it would eventually damage the record. Does this mean I need a new stylus?

Quick google and in made from (1980-1981) cartridge will be 1/2 a century old , suspension has aged and collapsed/failed
Sony XL-15A MM Cartridge factory fitment , you can get a new stylus/suspension
