Heard Denon (amongst many others) are increasing prices substantially. Apparently the company's rather good PMA1500AE is jumping in price from just over £500 to £900 very soon. Shame as imo there was'nt much that came close and although it can still appeal at £900 if you like good build and a solid, coherent sound it has to compete with a few capable products there, CA and Roksan to name just two. Don't quote me on this and it may just be rumour but little would surprise me at the moment.

Sales will tumble as a result if it's true. Granted the economic situation (I hate the words credit crunch and wish I could string up who coined it) is dire, along with the £ exchange rates - but an 80% hike?
There are indeed more price rises on the way. We're just getting confirmation of exact details, as we'd rather inform than speculate

Prices are coming down in everything from food to cars, economists fear deflation (continual decrease in prices), consumers are already cash-strapped - nobody in their right mind should be increasing prices. Some Japanese manufacturers have to due to appreciation of the Yen but if you are not based in Japan...?

It's more due to the weakening of the GBP against:
- the USD
- the EURO
- the YEN

Plus Denon and Marantz are Japanese companies....
It's also worth noting that all component prices are in dollars, which makes costs higher for British companies, too.
I wholeheartedly agree that it's the worst possible time for anyone to be raising prices, but then what choice to many companies have when the alternative is selling products at a loss?

There have been price rises for new stock coming in - again, we're getting that information confirmed and will let you know (and then, of course, it's going to be down to individual retailers, as always, as to the price they choose to charge).

Well, at the end of last month the Pound was worth about 60% of what it was against the Yen in August last year, which would suggest that getting on for 70% increases would be justified on exchange rates alone.
Earlier in 2008, the Pound was worth around Y230-240, which makes the fall to today even more dramatic. From this time last year the Pound has more or less halved in value against the Yen.

If the PMA1500AE is going up by that much I'm glad I bought when I did!!!! I certainly couldn't have afforded £900 for the amp alone. Its a cracking amplifier, and beautifully built like most Denon stuff, but that is one massive price increase.

Unfortunately as already mentioned most manufacturers will be dealing in either Yen, USD or Euro so will be forced to raise the prices in GBP, or suffer large losses in the UK. I have found that my component prices are rising by approx 6-10% from my suppliers dealing in Euro and even those rises are small in comparison to the real change in exchange rates. I only have one supplier that I pay in USD, and fortunately it is a component used in a high end product that can swallow some of the higher costs.
So let's suppose the dollar would be to massively slide as many economists are suggesting, on that basis, if prices do not fall accordingly in the UK, would you say that we are being ripped off? This reminds me in a way of the taxi companies who were justifying their price hikes based on the price of oil but since oil has fallen massively, the pricing levels have remained in place. Perhaps I am overly cynical but I just can't see the manufacturers dropping their prices again much regardless of the currency strengths of others.
To keep things on topic, the major problem at the moment is the huge strength of the Yen, not the Dollar.

My boss was kind of suggesting this afternoon that those bankers claiming they are entitled to bonuses may kind of have a point if they weren't included in the decision making processes which led to the their banks going into crises.

Good stuff! I bought a second hand Meridian G08 at the weekend for £900 which retailed at £2250. I bought a Chord CPM 2600 amp ex dem with 1 year warranty for £2k which retailed at £4150. Bargains are there to be had.

Certainly it makes British goods more affordable abroad - though as mentioned earlier in the thread, some of the shine's been taken off that with higher component costs (not to mention significantly decreased overseas demand as this damn recession is truly global).

I would think that if prices go up because of the exchange rate with the yen its going to put even more pressure on hard pressed retailers,as this will almost certainly have an adverse affect on sales.
I guess you are paying the price now for clinging to the pound instead of joining the euro...
