Post ranking: how does it work?

I've just noticed I'm post ranked 2, which I recall has been pretty much the case since around 2,000.posts. When will that change?

There is an explanation somewhere, which JD fished out, but can't remember where it is. Is it really that important?

Top 10 posters* are 1, next 10 are 2, next 10 are 4, next 10 are 8. Or something like that.
