I just found this

http://www.hdtvtest.co.uk/news/input-lag

and looked at the input lag you mentioned, the Samsung says 44ms and your Sony says 32ms, so just wondered where you got the figure from to say they were similar?

OK so I found the review in question which says about the lag trick and they quote a figure of 41ms which you can find here under the test results tab:

http://www.avforums.com/reviews/Samsung-UE-F8000-55F8000-55-47F800-47-75F8000-75-Inch-3D-LED-LCD-Smart-TV-Review_491/Review.html

Still more than my Sony but still good enough for gaming as 40ms is about the average lag input these days with LED tvs and certainly not a deal breaker for me.

Hi oldboy, have you considered the model down, the f7000?

cheers

rocket

Hello rocket no I hadn't until I read the rview for the 40 inch version WHF published on the site the other day...I did see it in John Lewis and it's not quite as good as the F8000 but if the price was good enough I would certainly consider it but mainly the prospect of a 55F8000 for £1856 is why I haven't considered it but it's a decent plan b at the very least.

Time for some price comparisons between the two models me thinks.

Hmmm initial results are that the 55F7000 is £1612 from the same place where I price matched the F8000 and when you add on the £100 cash back the toal price would be £1512 where as the F8000 after cashback would be £1656 so maybe not enough of a saving to sway me but £140 is quite a difference in price.

It's all about performance though...does the F8000 justify the extra £140...from what I saw I think so but it may be worth having another look at this one??

Cheers for link oldboy, ill have a read later when I'm not working :)

i have the f7000 on my radar as the f8000 stand is a problem for me. I think the Sony viewing angle could be an issue but will audition both to see. These along with the gt60 and vt65 50 inch version finish my short list.

will just have to decide.....

50" plasma with potential better picture, low input lag but possible ir risk or

55" led with potential not as good picture, higher input lag but no risk of ir, oh and a much higher price for the Sony to

oh the decisions we have to make when looking for a tv :wall:

Yep much like my Sony HX853 I can see how the stand on the F8000 could be an issue as it leaves a huge footprint and would require a big stnd to accomodate it. The Sony W905 viewing angle will be an issue, in very bright conditions it's not as noticeable as I found in Currys but it was clearly visible in John Lewis in much softer lighting and when you bear in mind they are set to shop mode I can see in home mode the problem being far worse but as I said before if your seating position is head on then it's fine.

Sounds like you have the same dilema I have been facing and I have to say that the VT65 was a real tempter for me but the associated issues with plasma when gaming was a real deal breaker for me and an issue I just couldn't see beyond so for me personally it will have to be LED as my Sony has served me so well. Everyone is different though so don't discount plasma until you have had the chance to see them for yourself and weighed up the pros and cons which it seems you have already started to do.

Yep the price difference is an issue but if you do some homework all the sets you are looking at can be had for far less thean most retailers are advertising them for but as ever it's getting to look at them for yourself that will make your mind up, I will be very interested to know which way you go though so let me know. They don't make it easy for you though eh.

You can ring your local John Lewis store today & ask them to price match. They will let you know by Friday if they're happy to price match or not. You can then go on the weekend & place the order. Simples. :)

Otherwise, you'll have to wait until early next week. JL take 48 hours to confirm a price match request.

JL just declined my price match with total digital on the vt65 on the basis that I live to far from them

Eh? Too far from the John Lewis store or too far away from Total Digital?? Hmmm the plot thickens, it may not be looking so good for me after all...

To far from total digital. The vt65 is in store purchase only and as I live in Essex I'm miles away. It's within the wording so they are correct. I just thought I'd give it a go and see if I could get a match.

the Samsung should be ok, you can get that online as well

Judging by what rocketrazor has just been told on the phone I think i'm better off just going to the store on Saturday and talking it over just to be sure, i'm now expecting them to say no about the price match but I will do my best to make it happen. The wait doesn't concern me as it will only be a few days or a week at most and at least I can talk it over face to face with them and if need be get the manager involved, i'm expecting to come away empty handed though I must admit.

I'm sure the salesman in John Lewis said to me at the weekend that in order for them to price match the tv just needed to be a physical shop and in stock available to purchase, now i'm a bit confused. I'm going to call them when I get home I think.

I did my price match online and the reason they declined was

'In order to apply a price reduction on a purchase, the criteria in our pricing policy must be met. I regret that after review the request you have submitted does not match all or parts of this policy.

To match a price request, the competitor must trade on the same basis as us, for example we will not match online only retailers, mail order only or show-rooms attached to internet-only orders.

Total Digital offer this TV as an in store only promotion and due to the proximity in distance between you and the store, I would be unable to accept this price match.

Therefore, on this occasion I regret that I cannot match the price offered. If you would like to view more information about Never Knowingly Undersold and our pricing you can do so on our website'

As the Samsung can be purchased online you should be ok I would have thought

For some reason they seem to pick and choose who they will and who they won't at times. Can you do it in-store instead?

Ill try if I end up going for this tv. I wanted a bargaining chip for a good deal when I phone up my retailer about my gt50. I want to have a look at some of the others first which will be either this weekend or next hopefully

Oldboy, I must admit I'll be surprised if they agree to price match in-store. You're lucky that they 've agreed to price match as Total Digital is more than 8 miles away so price match requests can be hit & miss. If I were you, I would find the extra £5-600 & buy it online, for them to refund the difference later. If JL runs out of stock, your request will not be honoured. It has happened to me with a washing machine.

Thanks gel, you are the man in the know it seems with John Lewis...you should start up an advice line and comparison service mate as you have a knack of finding those bargains!

I'm going to call the store shortly but I did just receive this from John Lewis online in my inbox:

Dear Mr ******,

Thank you for your reply.

I am pleased to confirm that when a price match is accepted in store, they have the facility to manually reduce the price at the point of sale.

Please note; however, that a new price match request may need to be submitted to the store. You are able to advise that you have a price match confirmed with ourselves and quote query ID ********. I cannot guarantee that they will accept this though.

I hope this information will be of use to you and if I can be of any further assistance, please feel free to contact me again.

Yours sincerely,

Angela Toal

In that case I won't bother calling my nearest store and will admit defeat on this occasion.

I can't come up with that much extra cash for some time so ordering online really isn't an option for me, I guess I will be waiting much longer for the F8000 than I initially thought which is very disappointing but that's life I guess

you have nothing to lose by phoning them and seeing though. Give that a try before admitting defeat

Your price match offer is valid for 28 days, so you've got time. In any case, it appears to me that you're emptying your bank account for something you can wait for a bit longer, as you already have a working TV. Only you can decide how important it is for you, to risk emptying your bank account.

Yep all valid points but i'm not emptying my account this is money I have been saving up for some time which is ear marked for a new tv, right now i'm thinking about waiting for prices to fall further OR buying from Total Digital. I don't like the idea of buying from Total Digital just so I can get the tv for a good price because as I know all to well it's about quality of service and the fact that with John Lewis I would get a 5 year warranty with peice of mind that i'm buying from a well respected and trusted retailer with a store near to me.

I'm going to try them first and see if they will price match then take it from there, fingers crossed it works out but if not so be it and I will wait for the right offer to come along.
