So basically when you buy it at the shop, it is up to you which way you do it. Not sure with online.

Thanks gel yet again for the advice, you are a star

So it looks like I'm better off going in store to get a deal then and then I don't have to pay the full retail price is that correct? I just noticed on the John Lewis website that they have an "at home" store near to me which I beleive stock tvs and electrical goods which will make life alot easier for me as that's not too far from me but I will need to take a trip to the store to see how well stocked it is and to see if it carries the tvs I am looking at buying.

Oh one last thing what do you mean by waiting for it to go through? Does that mean they reserve a tv and then if it's approved you can go in at a later date to collect it...is that how it works? Sorry for the questions but having never even been into a John Lewis store let alone buy a tv from them I have no idea of how they do things there so your help is invaluable...as always! :)

I am not sure how it works online, but Instore you can get them to reserve you the TV while they take a day or so to do the price match, they then phone you up to confirm they will and then you pay. You can even phone them up and do it on the phone.

They deliver the TV to you for free and collect it for free if there is a problem.

That's great thanks gel.

Now I know there is a store not too far away from me I won't bother buying online now and will do it in store as it saves waiting and is a lot less hassle.

Will take a trip up there at the weekend to see what they have in stock and to see if I can look at some of the TVs on my list.

Thanks again gel really appreciate your help.

You can call John Lewis on the number provided in the email Oldboy, to place the order.

Just to disturb the apple cart a bit, check this out. 55-inch costs £2800, which isn't bad at all.

You know you want it!! :p

Nice try bigboss

I did look at that tv when it was announced but I've got no room for it due to the tv being designed to be placed on the rather fetching stand that takes up the bottom half of the tv, from what I remember the tv is not able to be wall mounted which is what I need and even if it could be it would be missing the point really as it looks so good on that stand.

Another issue is that it leans backwards which I just don't like, it's obvious this is a tv for those stylish homes you see in magazine spreads and not for me, I've got far too many black boxes that would need to placed in front or very near to it that it would ruin the aesthetics completely. It's a fabulous looking tv though and if my home suited it I definately would consider it...there is no denying there is more than a nod to B&O design going on here which makes it very pleasing on the eye.

It's also a bit over budget for me too so a no go but I am wondering if WHF are going to get one for review as I would be interested to hear how it fares :)

Check the Selfridges link. It can be wall mounted.

Again, check Selfridges link. It can be mounted straight without any lean. :)

Oldboy, I'm sorry about this; I suspect that I may be about to confuse rather than clarify. I was in John Lewis yesterday afternoon (before some joker asks, I don't spend all my time in John Lewis!) and I happened to see three 47" LG televisions, which were quite close to each other. They were the 47LA620V at £749, the 47LA960V at £999, and the 47LA790W at £1,399. I thought, remembering that I'm mainly a plasma man, that they all looked pretty decent showing the tennis from Wimbledon, in fact I was struggling to see why the two top models were more expensive than the cheapest model. They are all available in your preferred 55" size. It was hard to say how they compared to the sets on your shortlist, since they were not all positioned close to each other in John Lewis's oh-so-flattering fluorescent lights, but I thought that the LGs certainly held their own against the Sonys and the Samsungs.

I think Oldboy wants active 3D as he does not want to lose out on resolution. All LG TVs are passive 3D sets, as far as I'm aware (although personally I prefer passive 3D to active 3D for infinitely better comfort).

I have no real preference over active and passive really, its picture quality that I'm most concerned with. If a TV delivers great picture quality in both 2D and 3D then I couldn't care less if its passive or active 3D.

I just want a TV that offers an improvement over what I have already and as long as the 3D is convincing with good PQ I don't mind if its a passive system.

LG TVs don't as a rule seem to be up to the standards of those on my demo list but I've got an open mind and will give them a look although I remain unconvinced that they are up to the standard I would like.

I'd agree with you about LG sets being generally not as good as those on your list, but have a glance at them anyway. (My much-maligned LG 60PZ950T in the kitchen is pretty good in all respects, apart from its decidedly dodgy black level.) And, being passive 3D, they come with four pairs of 3D glasses ....

Of course I will give them a look and I remain open minded at this point but from the research I have done I beleive my money is best spent elsewhere but I won't rule them out until I have seen them for myself.

Many thanks for sharing your impressions of the LGs though Son_of_SJ and as always I really appreciate your input, thank you.

Hi Oldboy, have you seen John Lewis are offering cash back on the Samsung now:

http://www.johnlewis.com/samsung-ue55f8000-led-hd-1080p-3d-smart-tv-55-quad-core-with-freeview-freesat-hd-and-voice-motion-control-with-2x-3d-glasses/p430265

You might be able to get it even cheaper, if you still price match too.

Hello Oldboy!

While you're at JL's, why not take a look at this TV:
http://www.johnlewis.com/samsung-ps60f5500-plasma-hd-1080p-smart-tv-60-inch-with-freeview-hd/p517070
Yes, it may be plasma (then again, not a Panasonic), however if you're considering the VT65, then you might as well take a look at this one, after all 60ins for under a grand surely merits that at least? :)

That is £1656 for the Samsung 55f8000 now!

LOL I was going to post about an email I got from Richer Sounds this morning about this deal but you beat me to the punch as ever gel :) the offer is a Samsung promotion so you apply to them to get the £200 cash back and if I got the price match from John Lewis that would make a very tempting offer indeed providing I'm happy with how the tv performs when I view it at the weekend.

A total of £1656 for a top of the range Samsung LED TV is a great deal eh

Thanks for the link and I will indeed have a look at the Samsung plasma but as I said a little earlier in the thread I think i'm not going down the plasma route this year now and if I ever did then the VT65 would be my preferred choice.

Of course I remain open minded and will give this tv a look as it is alot of screen for the money but I would rather pay a little extra for a top of the range 2013 LED in all honesty as I still have misgivings about extended gaming on any plasma other than a Kuro which I know doesn't suffer in this regard like the latest Panasonic models seem to.

Panasonic or even Samsung Plasma are not cut out for long term gaming. The Risks posed is not worth the undertaking till there is a manufacturers' pledge to say otherwise. With Playstation 4 and Xbox 1 coming there is only one practical TV choice.

The Samsung F8000 is the best value LED out there now. Can't believe how cheap it is getting especially outside London prices, depreciating the fastest in the top 55 inches of TVs,but then the F8500 is the new LED poster boy.

On price the F8000 is the best bang per buck TV and a five star TV at that *****

Sony is offering a free blu ray player and a smartphone with selected TVs, along with 5 year guarantee (click the pic).

Unfortunately, Direct TVs doesn't stock larger screen sizes in the Sony. Worth checking other shops as to who else is doing the deal.

bigboss you beat me to this one much like gel did with the Samsung offer :)

I didn't scroll down my Richer Sounds VIP email until just now and they have the deal on with the 55W905 tv so you get the Experia Z smartphone, a 5 year warranty and a choice of the BDPS490 bluray player for free or the BDVE190 bluray 5.1 system for half price which judging by the price online comes to £60.

These deals are crazy but I think the Samsung appeals more as a TV simply because of those ridiculous viewing angles on the W905 which hopefully I can test for myself tomorrow but that amount of free kit and 5 year warranty is real tempter if the tv peforms well enough...the manufacturers must be desperate to sell this year as prices have fallen quickly and they are bundling all sorts of incentives this year which can only be good for me. Perfect timing to buy a new tv me thinks
