You are spot on with that gel...I can't help but think it's the best tv I can buy this year for PQ but the same old hang ups remain, my past experiences really are a huge barrier to me considering buying one and right now the head is ruling the heart. It would look nice in place of my HX853 though....

Oldboy, the new Panasonics starting from the 50 series are leagues ahead of the past ones in picture quality, the difference is huge! Just buy from John Lewis they will look after you. They are nothing like a Richer Sounds! You have about a month to change your mind, even after using it! Then in the 5 year warranty they will fix any problems or give you a refund! You can't lose.

Personally, I prefer passive 3D. It's difficult to notice any loss in resolution, and the comfort factor is extremely high. Let us know what you think of the demo.

Not one for me judging by that review but good to know that I was right when I said the 8 series uses an LG IPS panel. A tv with black levels that poor isn't one for me and would be a massive step backwards from the tv I have now which is pointless, I will still demo one but I have a feeling it will quickly get dismissed but many thanks for the link.

The input lag on it is an eye opener but I would only really consider it as a dedicated gaming tv as I feel for movies I would feel very short changed judging by that review but I will still seek one out to judge for myself.

Oldboy, if you went down the VT65 route I genuinely don't think you will find yourself disappointed - this years panasonic plasma's seem to be pretty much outstanding across the board and the VT especially so.

The John Lewis never knowingly undersold guarantee is something I never knew about so that's very reassuring indeed, it's a great deal. Along with the reports of the level of customer service received by other forum members I can't see my next tv coming from anywhere else and some careful research into pricing could see the price drop even further.

How are things going with your situation now? Has the replacement GT50 turned out to be any better after a run in? It sounds like you have a GT60 or VT65 on your mind so I preume the GT50 is going back? It's a shame a 55 inch won't quite fit and is a bit over budget but then we all have restrictions of space, cash and those other halves place on us so something has to give eh.

My next tv is intended to last me until OLED becomes available at large screen sizes at the price point of current tvs and so a 5 year guarantee is essential as I'm sure that's a minimum amount of time it will take for that to happen maybe even longer and I won't want to buy another tv before then.

Will report back with the demo results of the 55VT65 but until then I will continue to look for tvs to add to my list and will appreciate everyones thoughts as usual.

Not really, just as long as there is an actual shop they will price match. Could try getting away with just an online shop, I would!

I don't doubt that for a second but my only reservations have been purely those of reliability and not performance with gaming on a VT65 a particular concern for me after past experiences of Panasonic plasmas, i'm hoping things have improved this year but it's still an issue I would like some answers to before I consider buying one.

I forgot to mention the tranferable warranty too...that is very unusual for a retailer to do that!

Don't worry my tv will come only from John Lewis and is that big a deal that I will probably not consider a tv they don't stock which doesn't seem to be many to be fair. I'm not going to jump in straight away so I've got plenty of time to research and wait for prices to drop a little, I really don't want to buy at full rrp prices that's for sure but certainly want to buy before the end of this year.

I know JL will replace the screen or carry out any repairs which is great but I guess what I was getting at was that I really want to avoid all that if I can, i've had such a good experience of owning my HX853 that I want to replicate the pleasure of ownership i've had with this tv...no reliability issues or needing to go through multiple sets before i'm happy with one and all the hassle that entails with being without a tv for long periods etc.

I know no tv is perfect but my experience goes to show that not all manufacturers are equal, I know i'm predjudiced by my past panasonic experiences but they can't be over looked either. I would dearly love to buy a VT65 but i'm just reticent to go through all the hassle again no matter how good the retailer and the tv but what I plan to do is talk over my concerns with JL before I decide what i'm going to do as I would be far less tolerant of faulty sets or issues this time around.

If it helps I've spent about 5 hours on the Xbox this weekend with my 2013 panny, and absolutely no sign of an IR or other issue. Provided you don't have the contrast or colour set to suicidal levels then you should be ok with this years crop (apart from the ST, which apparently has bad lag for some reason that I can't recall).

my gt50 unfortunately still has the vertical lines, which annoyingly I didn't have on my first until they replacement screen. Ill be taking it up with my local retailer soon and see what they say. It's a shame as all other aspects are great, but this does really annoy me. Because my setup is in a corner and I have floor standing speakers it does mean my tv has to fit in a certain size gap. That's reassuring but then you do own the top of the range ZT65 so I would expect no less but it may be a sign that things have improved since my awful GT30 experience a while back so I would expect similar performance on a VT65. I never over done the settings on my GT30 when gaming infact they were half when compared to the default game mode settings so I was very careful with that tv, I know I done all I could to prevent any issues so the fault was always with the tv and not with anything I done.

Many thanks for the info though as you cant beat the experience of actual owners to get an understanding of how tvs perform in the real world and not just for review purposes

Which is a major concern for me and as I know is not covered in any warranty so once you get an issue like that there is very little you can do about it, it's a major issue for me and I doubt even JL would do anything about it.

That's bad news and all I can hope is that you get the situation resolved quickly as this has gone on for long enough now and reminds me of the issues I faced with my Panasonic plasma and makes me more reticent to enter into all that again myself, if I wasn't a gamer I would feel far happier buying a Panasonic plasma but as it's a big part of how I use a tv it has to be taken into account before I buy.

I really hope your retailer is alot more understanding this time as you were very accommodating with the previous issue but I think a change of model would be a bare minimum this time so a GT60 has to be what to aim for unless you could come to an agreement where you pay some sort of token payment towards a VT65. The other option is to get a refund and start again, I just hope you get a resolution that you are happy with and very soon.

Moving the couch nearer to the tv is a good idea, I changed my entire living room round to accommodate my set up and it's paid off hugely being nearer to the tv especially with 3D but I know I have plenty of room for a bigger tv. Surround sound in my living room is now far better since the change round too and I just wish I had done it sooner.
