Hi everyone,

I connect my tv to the 360 via component (red, green, blue, red & white). I went to the settings and into display, and all resolutions were in bold black (meaning available). I changed output from 720p to 1080p and the screen goes black for a few seconds and reverts to the existing settings. It outputs in 480p, 720p & 1080i. My xbox doesn't have and hdmi port on it.

I spoke to an xbox technician who told me that as the xbox is working in 720p & 1080i and the option for 1080p is highlighted, the problem lies, not in the console or the component cable, but in the tv which probably doesn't support 1080p. I pointed out that the tv is a full hd panel and that blu rays output in 1080p, to which he did not respond.

I concluded by summarising the discussion as follows: "My xbox supports 1080p, my cable transmits 1080p and my tv supports 1080p, yet still I can't get 1080p." To which he responded, "you are in a no man's land" and laughed.

Is there something I'm missing here (other than a fully operational 1080p signal outputting in glorious hd on my tv) as to why this is not outputting as it should? Maybe a setting in my tv I need to change (50/60hz -I don't know, just speculating)

Any advice would be really great, as I have no clue what is wrong here.

Thanks

I could be wrong but if you are using component cables it won't output 1080p. I could be wrong tho. Either that or the old 360 model wont do it using component.

I didn't think component could transmit 1080p either until the xbox guy told me it could, and I checked on wikipedia. So apparently it can!

I don't see why the old 360 wouldn't do it if the console can output 1080p and the component cable can transmit it, but then again I know very little about all this.

Any potential solutions anyone? (other than buy a 360 elite or a ps3)

The XBOX 360 will and does happily output @1080p via its component cable (I have mine @1080p on my Samsung)

Just because your TV is FULL HD it does not mean that it is able to accept a 1080p signal via all of its inputs, so in the case of the Panasonic V10 if you take a lok at page 72 of your user manual and look at the excepted resolutions for each input you will see that via component the maximum resolution is 1080i 50/60htz, and according to page 60 you could not even do it by using a VGA cable for the 360 as the maximum resolution your V10 will accept via VGA is1366x768.

I would hasten a guess that this is also the case with michael hoy's Sony in that the problem does not lie with the 360's ability to output a 1080p signal but your TV's ability to accept via all of its inputs.

Personally I would not worry too much about it as 99% of games are at a native resolution of 720p and to be honest your TV will most probibly do a better job upscaling them to 1080p than the 360.

I appreciate you telling me that yours does the same thing, as the technician told me to try my xbox on another tv.

Do you know if there is a solution, like buying an adaptor wich will allow an hdmi connection?

If not, this means the original xbox 360 doesn't output in 1080p!

As my previous post THE PROBLEM IS YOUR TV NOT THE 360!

The only way to get the 360 to use HDMI is to buy a newer model equiped with a HDMI output.

There are a few games at a native 1080p resolution but not too many, a couple that spring to mind are Virtual Tennis and Ghostbusters but these will happily play at either 720p or 1080i.

Thanks for the explanation DJ Krime. I will play on 1080i I think, since 720p looks like it lacks a little detail.

I had no idea that different inputs varied in what they accepted as a maximum signal - guess I should have looked at that before buying my tv.

I haven't played much yet, but hopefully it should be fine as you say.

There are a lot of TVs on the market that will only accept 1080p via HDMI so you are not alone, maybe the reason is in the thinking that most equipment is now equiped with HDMI so component is almost forgoten about by the manifacturers of the TVs?

it depends on the game you play. PS3 accepts 1080p but when a game starts it will go down to 720p unless the game supports full 1080p. i dont think its cable related.

While the Xbox is capable of outputing 1080p via component, there are very very few displays that will accept a 1080p signal via their component inputs. On most all Full HD displays this functionality is reserved for the HDMI input only. I would imagine that this is the issue in your setup.

hi i owned a panasonic plasma the problem doesn't lie with the xbox its just that panasonic tvs don't take a 1080p signal via component only via hdmi it states that in their brochures.

I do wish people would check the facts before making sweeping statements like this.

As I stated there may not be many games that are encoded at a native 1080p resolution but they do exist on both 360 and PS3, with the PS3 actually making the job of defining the games native resolution far more simple than on the 360.

When you start up a PS3 on a 1080p pannel it will be displaying @1080p 50htz, when you launch a game it will then display the game at its native resolution generally being 720p.

PS3 games with a native 1080p resolution include,Virtua Tennis, Ghostbusters, Wipeout HD, Ridge Racer 7 and Garn Turismo 5 Prologue. I have allready stated 360 games in a previous post.

To quote Sony "Gran Turismo 5: Prologue runs in stunning High Definition at 1080p (race: 1080p-60fps, replay: 1080p-30fps)."

tvspecv:What is the reason behind keeping everything at 720p anyway? why dont they make them at 1080p or cant they?

It's usually a compromise to keep the framerate up. Running at 30fps at 1080p requires a lot of processing power, especially if it's a game where framerate is crucial like in a first person shooter. This is why Killzone 2 (which was originally penned to be 1080p) had to be dropped down as they couldn't get it running at a decent framerate at 1080p.

thank you professor, what is the point upgrading? does this increase download speed? or just give you more memory on the ps3?
