Clare Newsome:
As an update, a Sony technician is due in with us tomorrow to fix the two receivers we have in - the 820 and the 2400ES. We will then be re-testing the receivers - not only to check they now work with Sky HD, but also that the update hasn't somehow affected performance.

We're also still waiting on details of how the 820 models already out with customers will be fixed.

That will be interesting. Any idea when the new 2400s will arrive on shelves fully fixed?

maybe some one can answer this or you can test it when your rechecking the amps. does the 820 have any volume leveling gizmos like the onkyo amps for when your watching sky and you get louder adverts then the program so your not reacing for the volume control?

Will the amp when you change channels from a dd 5.1 soundtrack to a streo sound track automatically switch to pro logic 2(x) or will it be stuck on 2.1 unless you manually change it?

Cheers

I'm afraid it's not going to be a fix you'll be able to do at home - it's going to be a lid-off job which would invalidate the warranty if you did it anyway. We're waiting to hear whether Sony will be doing it as a dealer fix, a return to Sony fix or a replacement of the product with a fixed example.

Also something we'll be endeavouring to find out, but I gather it'll be later this month.

Thanks Andrew. A decent review permitting, I will be replacing my trusty 1200es with the 2400es soon as.

I am looking forward to the STR - DA2400ES which will hopefully go well with the new KDL-52W4500 I have on order. The wait is killing me...

Plan on getting some Anthony Gallo Micro Ti speakers but still searching for the right sub woofer.

They look beautiful! If you are going to have your subwoofer on show, you just have to try out the matching sub from AG surely? If you are going to hide the sub, and don't think they are ugly, try out the RSW12 that I have - it's a beast.

UPDATE: 2400ES fix done before our very eyes, I'm told, and it works.

Fix for the 820 slightly more complex as it needs to add some functionality, so software still being written, apparently.

STR-DA2400ES now back in the review mix - will let you know when I know when it's scheduled to be published.

I am considering the MPS 150 from AG but not sure where to put it.

The next month will be fab as I am going from a 32" LG (which has served me well) to a fullish Home Cinema setup. Excited is not the word, I am like a little child again.

Fingers crossed it will be a similar speedy update for all the ES range. Last time I popped into my local Sony dealer they reckoned they'd be getting stock in at the end of the month (I'm looking at the 3400ES). Looks like that might actually be a possibility.

Well as I said I've been assured the 5400ES isn't affected by the problem, but I'm not sure about the 3400ES - ie whether it shares architecture with the model above or the model below.

Hi, is there some kind of definitive reference we can get from Sony that we can give to dealers etc regarding this situation?

Because it seems the right hand of Sony doesn't talk to the left so although the technicians that WhatHiFi have been dealing with are clued up about the situation, it could take forever for the information to reach the various dealers out there.

Maybe a technical bulletin on their website or something? Or an official PDF we could print out with all the relevant details, the fact it's a known issue, an official recall, and fully covered under warranty etc?

Andrew Everard:We're assured that the entire supply chain is now aware of the situation, but as soon as we have some definitive information it will be passed on.

Andrew, this thread is all a bit of a bewilderment. Are the Sony receivers coming off the production line now fixed?

I suspect that a lot of product has already been made, and is now being modified - most manufacturers tend to make products in large batches rather than running continuous production like car manufacturers.

So it's good for you and I to start recommending them with no qualms?

This is part of the email I got from Sony today

"However, no details of the products due for launch in the future or their specifications are made available or published prior to their launch..."

Which I found very funny as the LCD TV I am waiting for is advertised on the sony.co.uk site but the AV receivers are not.

Two dealers are reporting "...our back order is currently showing a planned despatch of the 24th September..." but most just say either end of September or early October.

Not sure myself, but it means basically all manufacturers abuse their customers in order to compete with their direct competition.
