I am thinking of getting the 820 to use with a PS3 and Pana 42" plasma, am i likely to get the same issues, i would think the 820 should have no issues with a PS3, but i also am getting Sky HD, will this be a problem or was it just the TV.

Some 'behind the scenes' stuff on the latter here.

That's a really good read, thanks for that. I'm constantly umming and ahhing about which AV receiver to get, as it will be quite a big outlay for me (inclusive of style speakers and cabling) once I finally decide. I've been very tempted to bite the bullet in the last day or so, and get either the Onkyo 606 or 875. I think I'll try and hold out, and see what you all think about the 3400ES before making my purchases.

Thanks again for your help and patience!

been looking about and i see the onkyo 875 is around £699 almost anywhere now,so by the time the 2400es is out it will in my opinion be about £600,i have the kef 3005se speaker package and HTB2SE sub

i wonder if i would be wise to get the onkyo over the 2400es or would the sony be better suited to the kef speakers ?

Hi Andyÿ

Sounds like you are after something similar to me - Im hoping the 3400ES comes in at a slightly lower price than the RRP and that its good too! But I was also considering the Denon AVR 2309ÿas it has 4 HDMI inputs rather than 3 on the 1909... Is there any reason you've ruled that out? Thisÿdecisionÿis so hard as I really want to buy something, but nothing isÿavailableÿyet so cant audition anything. All the HiFi stores I've spoken to have basically told me that Sony Amps are never that great! Ive never had a problem with them in the past but I cant help but feel maybe Ive been missing out...ÿÿ

That'll be hi-fi shops that either a) don't stock Sony or b) are miffed that Sony also supplies online retailers, then

I have always ended up with a sony for some reason :) but with all the hate talk and the fact Ive never been able to audition a Sony in the same place as anotherÿreceiverÿI've always wandered if I made the right choice... Why is this so hard?? Thankfully we have What HiFi to help us out :pÿ

Right now we are running in the Sony 2400ES and warming-through the Denon AVR-1909, a new Yamaha, Pioneer...and the curve-ball of a new £400 Panasonic receiver. It's going to be a corker of a £400-£500 test!

Oh, I'm looking forward to that!

There's always some important review just round the corner, one of the joys of this hobby. Though it does drive my missus nuts when I put off decisions for a month or two so I can read a review

Back to the 820 and Sky HD thing, Eric suggests that anyone having problems should try using the digital input allocated to SACD/CD and reassign that one to the input to which the HDMI from the box is connected.

Clare Newsome:Issue after next - out 18th September (with subscribers earlier). We'll also put at least one of the receiver reviews online ahead of that...

Awesome news. With any luck we may even be able to go and buy one of the Sonys or Denons by the time the head to head is out ;)

Hi,

I heard that fix doesn''t work.

Also not sure how to do the assigning - this is my first av receiver ( and my first post on here !)

I have just received my 820 about half an hour ago -not opened it yet due to this issue.

Sorry but how exactly is the optical TOSlink cable from the Sky HD box supposed to be connected to the RCA input for the SA-CD?

Bought this and the Tannoy EFX 6.1 speakers as on a budget .( would rather have had something better -unfortunately cant afford it at this moment in time) If this is not going to work i will send it back and save for something better.

I will be connecting Xbox with HDdvd drive hdmi , Panasonic dvd recorder ex75, Sky hd and PS3 . Thanks

I haven't seen it, but I would assume there is also an optical digital input assigned to the SACD/CD...

Mines packed away in the box now - but looking at a US manual online, and assuming it has the same inputs, there is no specific digital audio input for SACD/CD. http://akamaipix.crutchfield.com/Manuals/158/158STDG820.PDF Not sure what Eric was refering to?

Regarding the issue I had with no audio at all when connected to my DVI-D panel - as has been pointed out elsewhere this IS an (fairly fundemental) issue which is mentioned in the manual on page 24.

"

We do not recommend using an HDMI-DVI

conversion cable. When you connect an

HDMI-DVI conversion cable to a DVI-D

component, the sound and/or the image may

not be output. Connect other audio cords or

digital connecting cords, then set "Digital

Assign" when the sound is not output correctly."

(But that doesn't work)

So this amp is deffinately not for you if you have a DVI-D input panel.

Yes, packed mine up too - I dont have anything dvi - BUT the sound issue with Sky hd is a problem !

Using optical doesn''t work -you still just get the stereo sound !

Presuming that the HDMI 5.1 audio issue with Sky HD isn't workable on the 2400 (ie. you're not able to pair a HDMI video input with opticalcoax audio) and Sony aren't likely to be fix it, does the Denon 1909 suffer with this problem ?

It sounds like I will be cancelling my pre-order for the 2400ES.

A) There seems to be a way of doing it, as explained above

Unfortunately there isnt -all those methods have been tried and the hdmi input on the amp overides the optical !

Therefore you only get 2.1 /stereo sound -NOT HD !
