hi people

i am new to the forum and have been reading with great interest ,i have on pre order from play.com the SONY STR-DA2400ES

which i know is a bit of a gamble as there have been no reviews as yet,so i hope we will get some king of indication from what hi-fi as to the quality of the amp :)

i have just recieved

KEF KHT3005SE speakers which i bought for £800 brand new from a well known hifi supplier who told me that they will get in trouble for selling them at that price :)

i have set them up,but with a 5 year old panasonic amp so not that much difference in sound tbh,but i really would like to know what to get to go with these speakers

SONY STR-DA2400ES

or

DENON AVR1909

if it turns out that the denon would be better with the 3005se speakers then i will cancel the pre order on the 2400ES

any thoughts ?

As you said yourself, there are no reviews yet so it would be impossible to say.

As Clare mentions, WHF were supposed to be getting a 2400ES in yesterday. So fingers crossed, we may have a review of it in the next few days. I imagine then some comparison would be able to be made.

although i have my 2400es on pre-order from play.com,i wthought i would pop in to the sony centre at cribbs causeway in bristol. they looked up on the computer and told me 27 august for the 2400es in silver 27 september for the 2400es in black i have a black one on pre-order and see no reason why black would come out 1 month after the silver lol but anyway lets hope the sony centre are wrong as i do not want to wait that long,if it is going to be the end of september i may put my money towards denon and get the denon avr1909 or avr2309...... we shall see.

think sony could miss the boat if they dont get the 2400es out soonish as most people will go and buy the onk 606 or the denon 1909
and who could blame them, unless the 2400es is way ahead of them but i really dont think it will be.
the only reason i dont want the onk is it only does upto 1080i
and the only reason i dont really want the denon is it has only 3 hdmi connections
the only reason i am waiting on the 2400es is 4 hdmi and 1080p upscaling and converting.
first sign of a bad review and i will just have to live with 3 hdmi connections and get the 1909 or pay the extra and get the 2309 that has more power and 4 hdmi connections but it is £200 more :-/
so fingers crossed it will be a good receiver ;-)

Not yet, I'm afraid - we are so deluged with equipment at the moment that I don't think we've even fired it up in anger yet.

As far as I know it's sitting in one of the listening rooms 'cooking', but rest assured that as soon as we've given it a thorough review work-out and got the copy written, we'll let you know what we think.

The big problem when we get to Awards judging is what to tackle first - the usual trickle of new kit becomes a deluge.

But it's up there on the priority list, believe me....

You wait for one AV receiver, and then three come at once!

Three? Wish it was only three!

Well I just recieved my Sony STR-DG820 from the courier this morning and I've hit a MAJOR snag with it - which as usual, once I'd seen the problem myself, I find there are also other forum posts which highlight the issue - which is...

It is impossible to force the selection of the Optical Audio Inputs, when watching a HDMI video source.

This means you can't get any Digital Audio from a SkyHD or BT Vision Box :-( and I have both.

As soon as you switch to the Video Input using HDMI it expects Digital audio via HDMI (you can force the audio input to be via analogue), but not via the Coax or Optical Digital inputs.

Until Sony fix this issue I think Onkyo can rest easy with their 606.

I have no other alternative but to ship the unit back.

No it does not - and neither does the BT Vision Box, it would seem!

I think this may start to cool the enthusiasum for the 820 I'm afraid. Let's hope this is not repeated by the 2400ES.

No, Sky 5.1 is only available on optical. Fortunately you can reassign the optical input to enable you to switch sound via optical and picture via HDMI - see manual pp76-77.

Sony has even helpfully called the relevant optical input "Sat" so you know where your Sky sound feed should go....

Andy Grange:Andrew, are you able to tell us what receivers you have....errrrr.... received for testing?

As you know we have had the STR-DG820, and now we also have....errrr.... the STR-DA2400ES.

Some 'behind the scenes' stuff on the latter here.

They may have done - but I'm afraid it does not work - well least not for me. I'd love to be proved wrong.

As it is I have run into another gottcha. Which I believe is caused by the fact my Hitachi Plasma panel uses a DVI-D port (with HDCP) not a HDMI port. The consequence of this is I can't get any audio from Sony PS3 via HDMI. What happens I believe is the PS3 is basically interogating the screen via HDMI, gets a response back to say I'm only DVI-D and hence disables the HDMI audio. I've proved this because as soon as I disconnect the DVI-D plug from the panel I start to get audio from the Amp, plug it back in and it goes off. The display on the amp is correct when disconnected, showing a multi channel LPCM signal.

So back to my trusty Yamaha A2 and HDMI switch box for now :-(

Optical output on the Sky box set to Dolby Digital? Optical cable plugged into the receiver's SAT input?

If so, it may be a system-specific glitch, rather like the PS3 one you've encountered, but I have used other receivers with these components and a screen only having a DVI input with no problems. May be worth checking that the HDMI control is turned off on the receiver.

Hi Andrew, thanks for your assistance. I've re-checked everything, and tried toggling the HDMI control option with no effect.

The crux of the issue I'm having does appear to be down to the DVI-D connection on my Plasma Panel

Are you in a position to be able to test the 2400ES using a PS3 with a panel that uses DVI-D? I could do with finding out if that to is similarly effected as that would be probably my other choice.

I'm not in such a position at the moment, but will be trying the 2400ES in the fullness of time at home when it's been through all the testing required for the magazine.

And I've had a converstion with Eric Kingdon at Sony re your optical problem, and he sees no reason why you shouldn't be able to reassign the input. Silly qustion, but are you sure there's actually signal on the optical cable?

Yes there was signal on the optical output (I was using this before anyway into the A2) - I checked this again by removing all the HDMI connections, leaving just the optical connection from the Sky HD box. Like that I got the 5.1 DD audio. Seems crazy to me that they should leave out such a simple option as being able to force select the alternate digital audio inputs for the particular digital video input.

It's packed up back in it's box now awaiting an RMA number.

I really would appreciate the feedback on the 2400ES DVI-D inter-op when you have it. Like wise if there is anyone else reading this using HDMI HD audio from a PS3 with a receiver in conjunction with a DVI-D based TV/Monitor I'd be keen to know their experiences.

As a matter of interest I just found this other forum post http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1015512 where someone had exactly the same issue as me with the STR-DG720.
