Octopo:With which method did said naughty company want you to pay LordBrian?

Said naughty company wanted Western Union which is virtually untraceable.

In that case I could hazard a guess as to which website it was, and I think it should be openly advertised on this site to be fraudulent.

Gerrardasnails:Well, I've gone ahead and gambled. I've ordered the 3400es from Hifi Confidential. They have three units at the moment and are expecting some more soon. They are awaiting a delivery on the 2400s very soon also.I doubt that I will ever use the Zone 2 posibilities and so it's not important to me. I'm more interested in the sound and upscaling it can do.

There is a guy on another audio and video related forum called AndyST who has one and is doing a review tonight hopefully. He has unboxing pics.

A friend of mine has contacts with somebody who can get me one, allegedly, at near cost. He expects to have stock 1st Oct.

Just a hunch but I expect the price of the 3400 to drop quite considerably. Of course this is all speculation until I see the invoice and have the goods in my hands.

I'm fully expecting there to be a price drop but £700 for what is has to offer seems about right to me. I don't plan on changing again for a long while afterwards. I will never need three hdmi let alone four. The clincher for me is that my 1200es is excellent and so easy to play around with. The 3400 seems to have an excellent GUI and the manual is pretty much the same as my current model. It is even more compact too - just 15.5 cm high.

Why is the 3400 RRP £300 more than the 2400?

All I can see is XMB and zone 2 which is useless because you can not even control it from your other room in the UK.

It's not just the IR that had gone, the 12v trigger+serial port has gone as well.

Looks like Sony are taking out features to save money and make an even bigger profit by selling the amp at nearly double the price than the USA.

If you put the 3400 again the Onkyo 706 it has trigger out, IR in and £100 cheaper, the Onkyo also has a graphic eqalizer where as the Sony only has bass and treble.

The Onk. is ugly and doesn't have a nice gui but is looking better value (Can always put a bag over it)

It isn't. The rrp on the 2400es is £500. And where are you reading about the lack of spec?

If you look at the 3400 thread I have posted rear pictures of the uk and usa models.
(The uk model is from an owner.)

We just get a blank space with loads of sony copyright writing. If you can't control zone 2 from another room then it defeats the object of having zone 2 unless you like going downstairs to change a setting then going back upstairs again.

I won't be using zone 2 and I'm sure firmware upgrades could be done in other ways.

I'm not sure any amount of firmware upgrades would add a IR Remote Port....

I would have used the Zone 2 but as it stands not now.

The 3400 would have been a nice amp if if was the same as the USA version.

I really can't justify the extra £200 for the UK cut-down version. Can't see Sony shifting the many 3400s outside of N. America.

Like previously mentioned, composite output over zone 2 and XMB. In the USA the 3400 is only about £50 more than the 2400.

Looks like the USA will be able to update their firmware using the serial port where as sony don't do updates for the UK. The 3300 and 5300 were full of bugs and got fixed in the USA.

Andrew Everard:Ah, but is the serial port the only way to update the firmware?

I've mentioned this Andrew, I very much doubt that it is. And to be honest, as you and others have mentioned before, a spec sheet doesn't mean a great deal. I contacted Denon recently and asked if the new Denon 2309 would be as good as the old Denon 2808. On paper, the 2309 does a bit more (including more connectivity). The Denon guy was emphatic. The 2808 would be a step up in class. The spec sheets don't explain the nuts and bolts and all the circuitry.

Gerrardasnails:Sorry Clare, not if you want HD audio, upconversion, upscaling to 1080p and PRE OUTS for £400! It's the Sony all the way.How about the Denon AVR-2808? It's available from Richer Sounds stores for £100 less than their online price if you sign up to their VIP mailing and take a copy of the flyer.

Also, the Yamaha DSP-AX763 gets pretty close apart from the upscaling - budget scalers don't tend to be that great anyway IMO. Just leave that function to your television or the source. we'll have to wait and see how well the Sony av receivers do in that regard.

Yep, if you are happy with silver, £399 for the 2808 is the best deal by a country mile.

Gort, I hate to butt in.

We have always been far removed from the US feature / penny margins. We get ripped off face it. So do most of Europe compared to the US/Asia, and we go to Europe to buy! Get over it.

There are some features that the UK doesn't employ, and there are some features Sony can't employ on a receiver that won't sell as well as in other areas of the world. Buy what you want, Sony will be OK.

Gort1951:The only other way to update the firmware is to use the optical/digital input from a CD.

On some receivers there is a hidden access port - this may be the way on the Sony models. Or perhaps something can be done via the Digital Media Port - just a thought...

Thanks Andrew, I am sure you are a little more informed than us having had the 2400 repaired. However no amount of firmware upgrades are going to add a remote IR port.

I wasn't there when it was repaired, so have no concrete info, but I'm told it was done without the lid coming off.

But agreed on the IR port - I was just answering the point about firmware upgrades.

As always your input is much appreciated, especially as I know this is your last day before your holidays. Any news of the 2400 review ?

Not holidays - I wish! - but a lengthy trip to Japan and Hong Kong to cover a couple of shows for this site - watch out for news and blog pieces - and visit some manufacturers.

Sorry for the delay on the review - the reviewer writing up the test hit some time problems yesterday - but Mr Editor Clough promises it'll be online early next week

The 2400es review arrives!! (WHF homepage)

Very impressive, I may be sold. Especially as this seems to be available for £400 rather than £500

Hmm i wonder how well it will play stereo, as my stero amp is a bit long in the tooth anyway do you think my sqeezebox duet plugged into this 2400es amp via my Beresford Dac will sound noticibly worse than plugged into my Arcam Alpha 8 via the Dac?

Cheers!

Simon
