Having just took a gamble (Normally read the magazine reviews first!) in aquiring the new Sony KDL-52W4000 I was hoping that you could help me out with how to calibrate the picture settings, can anybody offer any guidelines as to where to set backlight, contrast, brightness, colour etc. I have read the odd discussion on the Spyder TV which seems a bit expensive for a single use and somewhere I have read that you can down load test cards, if so, how do they work? Thanks Paul

If you can't afford the Spyder, use any THX DVD with the THX 'Optimode' section on it (Star Wars III, for example) and follow the on-screen instructions.

There are a whole series of test patterns on the disc which will help you calibrate your TV more accurately.

Or you can buy a dedicated calibration disc such as Digital Video Essentials, available from Amazon.

Guys, I know the THX Optimode is "free" and that's always a more tempting option than paying for a test disc, but anyone interested in picture and sound quality should really consider buying a copy of PAL Digital Video Essentials. At less than £15 online it's a no-brainer.

PAL DVE has a lot more to offer than just setting the basic brightness, contrast and colour controls. The sound setup sections alone are worth the price. Before you spend any money on new cables or gear get a copy of PAL DVE and give your system the once over. You might be surprised just how much extra performance is waiting to be discovered once you make a few demon tweaks.
