I was torn with the same two tvs and I am absolutely sure I made the right choice now, I'm sure you will be more than happy with the tv when it arrives but just be sure to set it up properly as it needs a bit of tweaking from the settings out of the box...any problems just post on here and I can assure that myself and fellow forum members will be here to help.

I have done a bit of searching today and found another review site that listed these settings after proffesional calibration.

Thought it may be of interest.

Pretty similar to f1 only's settings apart from the backlight.

The Eco settings should be set to Off as it works against the rest of the settings as far as the backlight is concerned. The backlight is all dependant on your room lighting. In their calibration settings this may have been set at 7 because of the room lighting being very bright. If the TV is set up properly it actually uses less electricity than is stated on the specifications by around 5 watts.

I have one light on in my front room when viewing & it is only a 5 to 6 watt bulb of the newer power saving type so is equivalent to around 30 watts i believe.

My only other comment is Motionflow is set as theirs Clear or Clear Plus only for viewing TV programes & turned off when watching a Blu-ray, although you may need it on for watching DVD & i have watched any yet.

There was a software update for the 46-HX853 TV yesterday, after which i had to re-adjust settings in general TV viewing mode back to the calibrated settings, it altered one or two of them within the update.

Interesting...the update changed none of my settings from the calibrated results, what changed for you Paul??

Hi Nick & mikey, My white balance values all reset to 0 too, BUT only when watching the TV with the built in Digital TV Tuner, strangely all the HDMI input settings stayed the same.

By the way, I've had a couple of weeks now to run the TV in and I'm very happy with the TV after some initial concerns. After my initial posting about the clouding, I searched AVForums and was questioning everything regarding the TV. It's really not advisable to trail through that forum as I was looking for every detail mentioned (dead pixels, clouding, flashlights, banding, dse, etc etc). I've been waiting for a Sky HD 2TB box which didn't turn up today so took one out of another room and connected it up and the picture is even greater. It was really nice with the Freeview HD channels, but with the Sky box it gives a much nicer picture.

I can get 1080p out of the freeview HD but the Virgin Tivo box is only capable of outputting 1080i unfortunately. To be honest i cant see much of a difference in the picture quality, i do need an eye test though lol

Really? My Tivo box is outputting 1080p upscaled images on SD channels...it's clearly visible that this is happening by pressing the i+ button on the tv remote. How did you get 1080p out of Freeview HD? Don't think i've ever managed to get 1080p from any Freeview HD broadcast and as far as I was aware all Freeview HD broadcasts are 1080i...very interesting!

On the Freeview HD situation i got 1080p last night on BBC1 HD watching the Snow Babies Program.

Well the telly arrived yesterday and I got it set up within a hour using F1only's settings.HD picture quality is superb via Sky HD box, SD broadcasts are a bit iffy but I suppose that can be expected.

Tried a blu-ray last night and again a superb result, my only slight concern with the blu-ray picture was dark scenes seemed a touch too dark at times so it was sometimes difficult to see what was going on. Would increasing the backlight slightly or one of the other settings help?

Hi muzzer

I would turn the contrast up before turning up the backlight higher than 3, try a setting of 93 it wont hurt, you may need to go up to maximum on the contrast for 3d films to counter the dark glasses.

Make sure the motion flow is off & turn the film mode to either Auto 1 or off mine is set to Off when watching a Blu-ray. The least amount of processing you have when watching a Blu-ray the better it should look.

Paul, my Tivo settings say the same thing as yours yet the tv is quite clearly saying 1080p...any idea what is going on here ? I've double checked all my settings and as far as I'm concerned the tv should be displaying 1080i exactly the same as yours but I just can't work it out and it seems logical that the tv should show 1080i like yours, it's all very strange :?

I have a 1tb box that was installed a few weeks ago and i'm becoming very fond of it, it's alovely peice of kit. I've never seen 1080p on a Freeview tuner before and unfortunatley I missed that particular programme, I will have to keep an eye out for further 1080p programmes, I wonder if it's a case of now that the switchover is complete that the extra band width is available to show the occasional 1080p broadcast ?

I would echo the advice from f1only here but do bear in mind that every room is different, how strong is the lighting in your room ? If you have strong lighting then you may need to boost contrast, brightness and backlight but try to keep the backlight as low as possible...you are always better off adjusting contrast and brightness before turning up the backlight.

Also it's worth remembering that the settings given are just a good starting point and that some further adjustment may well be required, for me i've needed to slightly adjust brightness and colour from the settings given so try a quick run through with a THX optimiser dvd just to check the brightness and contrast for your tv in your room. I use AVS HD 709 as a calibration disc as I find it more accurate but just a run through with the THX Optimiser dvd will tell you if the brightness and contrast is right for your room with your lighting conditions and don't forget not all screens are equal as during manufacture there are degrees of tolerence.

At the end of the day if don't have a calibration disc or aren't interested in using one then your eyesight is the best judge so use the settings given as a base then adjust them to your own personal preference, it's you who will be looking at it so it's what seems right to you that matters most.

I have a KDL-40HX853 and am trying to calibrate it using the Essentials Bluray. As soon as the BD is playing, all access to picture adjustment settings disappear from the Options menu, so how on earth is one supposed to calibrate the TV? Pressing Home stops the BD playing.

Also, when showing jpeg photos via the BD, the TV changes the Scene mode to a setting supposedly optimised for viewing pictures. Unfortunately, I hate the settings used as the pictures look washed-out. How can I force the TV to use my settings when the BD is in Photo mode? (BDP-S490)

I have set mine up using F1's settings and they are fine, in order to setup my blu-ray hdmi input I had to unplug the player from the mains then enter the settings recommended here.I am sure you can change settings when playing a blu-ray I will post how when I remember how I did it

Simple solutions to both problems Geoff.

For picture adjustment when using the Essentials Bluray press the sync menu option on the tv remote when the disc is playing and scroll down to the TV control with the TV remote option and select it with the button on the remote in the middle of the circle...you can now adjust the tv picture options whilst the disc is playing.

For changing the scene when looking at photos press the option button on the tv remote, scroll down to scene select and choose from any of the options displayed...general, cinema, sports, music etc. You can then tailor any setting from the picture menu to taste so for example and to make it easier to remember use the photo scene but then go into the picture options after to alter the mode to your taste (adjust backlight, contrast, brightness etc etc) then when you are happy all you have to do when viewing photos in the future is select the photo scene via the option button.

have a GT50 buzzing too much for me (have always had LCD's) and contemplating an exchange to the 55 as I'm feeling I may find the 46 small having spent the last two weeks starring intensely at the GT50 wishing for the buzz to go.....

Any thoughts?

Hello Nick I've kept an eye on your thread regarding your buzzing issues with the GT50 as I suffered the same problem with my GT30 which I replaced with the 46HX853 after numerous issues with my GT30, I went through 3 of them until I got one that didn't suffer with issues but that 3rd one developed a fault after about 6 months that couldn't be repaired.

At that point I gave up with plasma as the previous G20 I had suffered a similar story and I've been very happy with the HX853 ever since I first installed it, pride of ownership, no issues, lovely picture quality, superior smart functionality etc etc...the list goes on when compared to the GT30.

The review from WHF about the 55HX853 was positive and it won the award for best 55 inch tv last year so I'm not sure where you get the impression that reviews have not been as favourable as those for the 46? I can't remember seeing any negative reviews for the 55 and I was considering getting it for the extra screen size but went for a 46 in the end and must say I'm a very happy chappy with it, the only slight negative is a little DSE when watching the footie but it's not bad or distracting just slight.

I'm slightly biased after my negative experiences with Panasonic plasmas of late and despite the fact that they had excellent picture quality I've been far happier with the HX853 in all areas and it even produces lovely deep blacks although I would say the GT30 produced slightly better insight into blacks but the HX853 is as close as I've ever seen an LED tv get to plasma in terms of picture quality and black levels.

Update on my picture settings issue. Thanks to your advice, I am now able to adjust all picture settings on the BD input. I would never have found that Sync Menu (or what it did) without your help.

hdtvtest scored it lower than the 46 and avforums I think.....although both liked it.....

have since noticed the 55 won't fit on my alphason stand (would hang 10cm each side) with the plinth so hopefully I won't find the 46 too small now (no other option really)......

i can see what the fuss is about with plasma's (blacks and motion) but I guess I can't take the buzz and I'm sure it not faulty.....it's akin to an old CRT on its way out....

anyway, not meaning to hijack the thread so I'll see what JL can do....not sure they have any 46' left!
