Update on my picture settings issue. Thanks to your advice, I am now able to adjust all picture settings on the BD input. I would never have found that Sync Menu (or what it did) without your help.

You are welcome Geoff just glad I could help you.

By the way to disable this feature completely go to the Home menu, scroll to Settings and select the External Inputs option, select HDMI Set-up and scroll down to the Device Control Keys option and select None. That will then disable the remote from enabling control over your devices rather than the tv for good meaning there is no longer any need to use the sync menu button on the remote, do this if you would prefer to just have the remote control the tv only at all times.

hdtvtest scored it lower than the 46 and avforums I think.....although both liked it.....

have since noticed the 55 won't fit on my alphason stand (would hang 10cm each side) with the plinth so hopefully I won't find the 46 too small now (no other option really)......

i can see what the fuss is about with plasma's (blacks and motion) but I guess I can't take the buzz and I'm sure it not faulty.....it's akin to an old CRT on its way out....

anyway, not meaning to hijack the thread so I'll see what JL can do....not sure they have any 46' left!

Strange that both of them rated it lower than the 46 because when I demoed both I could see no difference in picture quality so perhaps it's a case of the bigger screen causing a few issues? WHF never found any issues with the 55 so I guess it comes down to who you trust more for review purposes but as ever I would advise having a look for yourself and get out there to demo the tv before you decide what you are going to do.

It's a shame about the plinth stand not fitting your stand...I can understand the problem as it would just look odd if you put it on there with an overhang of that size, one option is that apparently Sony can provide a standard stand for the tv for a nominal £40 fee...it's been covered in another thread so once I find it I will add a link to it for you to look at.

I completely understand how annoying the buzzing is as I had one GT30 that was terrible and even turning the tv sound up to 75% never drowned it out, it drove me mad...it was like a an enormous fly was in the room! It's worth saying that alot of people have not reported the issue with the GT50 so would you not consider a replacement?

Let me know how you get on with JL and what you end up doing regarding a new set or replacement, you are not hijacking as it is related to the HX853, in the meantime I hope your discussions with JL prove fruitful and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Hi all

I have been having issues with my setup. I have tried f1's settings to no avail. It wound appear no matter what settings I apply the colours are washed out or really dark. So much so that I've contacted very for a replacement as there is no visible improvement over my 3 year old Panasonic.

I have purcased some Blue filter glasses to try and help calibrate the colour balance and have used the calibration disc detailed earlier in this thread. Settings are presently as per f1, anyone know what I should try next (for info, it was actually better out of the box which just isn't right)

Also does anyone else have issues with viewing angle. Tv is in the corner of the room angled towards the main seat, however when viewing from the other seat, the screen look washed out.

All I can say is that my settings don't produce washed out colours infact quite the opposite, realistic deep colours and perfect skin tones. Why don't you try a factory reset if the colours were better out of the box? It could also be the case that your previous tv was displaying an over saturated colour balance and so the Sony would look washed out, is this a possibility/?

If you are using blue filter glasses with the calibration disc then the colours should be very accurate, which disc did you use? If all the above doesn't help atall then it could be a case of the tv having some sort of fault and having an engineer out may be the best way forward.

As for the viewing angle that is simply where a plasma tv has distinct advantage as an LED tv is renowned for having a smaller viewing angle but the Sony HX853 does seem to have a very small ideal viewing angle, alot of reviews have pointed to it being as small as 10 degrees which even for an LED tv is is very small ideal angle. I notice it when shifting from one end of the sofa to the other for example and therefore it's just the tv and there is nothing you can do about it unless you can rearrange the furniture to compensate?

I'm going down the route of asking for a replacement set before demanding a refund as the set looks fantastic and the motion handling is by far the best I've ever seen (something my old panny was quite poor at!), but if that fails, then I think it will be another Panasonic for me!

Well you used a very good calibration disc so the colour should be very accurate, for a comparison when I done my calibration the colours on my HX853 were better than on my old Panasonic GT30 plasma which was no slouch with colours itself so I can offer no ideas as to what is going on with your set, perhaps a replacement will see an end to this issue.

I can't say the viewing is an issue in my particular set up as I just have a large reclining sofa parked infront of the tv so it's not an issue for me but i've seen alot of people complain of the same issue you are experiencing but it's just the tv and there is nothing you can do about it, have you considered a Panasonic plasma tv? The viewing angle wouldn't be a problem with one of those so perhaps have a look at the well received and rated GT50 range as an alternative if the Sony turns out to not suit you, hopefully a replacement will see an end to your issues though.

I've got a replacement on it's way later this week (hopefully!!!) so we'll see what they say. The tech support guy I spoke to was happy enough that I'd jumped through enough hoops to offer a straight swap. Oddly, it is actually getting better with more use, but hey, new one is on it's way now!

What I would say though is keep well clear of Very for electronics. I thought I'd got a good deal getting the 40" for £820 (Once cashback had been applied!), but they are a nightmare to deal with and in all honesty, I'd rather have paid the extra £100 and purchased it from Amazon

Thanks for your help though, I'll let you know how I get on with the replacement. I'll probably leave it a week or two before doing the calibration though.

Oh, one odd thing that it does do though, for some reason, it will turn from AV1 to Digital on it's own, all remotes on the table (so no one sitting on it) and the app is not loaded so the phone isn't doing it either I know it's not a signal issue as my Amp is still playing the sound without issue, all very odd, lets hope the new one doesn't do that as my other half hasn't got to grips with changing the settings back so has no TV in the daytime once it's happened!!!!

Good to hear a replacement will be with you soon fingers crossed, very strange that it's getting better with use and that along with the strange AV1 to Digital issue which my 46HX853 simply doesn't do indicate to me that the set you have received is faulty so hopefully you receive a good example as a replacement.

I've said this many times before but when buying a new tv it really does pay to research the retailer as much as the tv you wish to purchase because although the cheaper prices are tempting at the time of purchase, in the long run it can prove to be a false economy if the tv develops a fault and the retailer then turns out to be nightmare to deal with. It's often a better idea to pay a little extra in the first place just to have peice of mind that if anything goes wrong with the tv you will receive the service you expect of a decent retailer and in this case it would seem Very are anything but, I can't say I'm surprised though as they aren't as focused on electrical products like a more specialised retailer such as Richer Sounds are but lesson learnt eh.

Don't forget that Richer Sounds will match any deal you can find and beat it by at least 10% and that includes internet sites so bear that in mind in future as they are an excellent retailer.

Keep us posted with how the replacement fares when you receive it and I just hope that all your issues are solved when it turns up, any idea when you will get it?

I would swap the TV from the bedroom to the living room as the X3500 came out around 2007. Keep the Panasonic BDT500 player where it is.

I could not tell you as you have not said whether any, or all, are calibrated, plus it is all dependent on room lighting. Having said that I would definitely expect the best picture from the projector.

I finally think the nightmare is over. The replacement has arrived and is great. The colour balance is much better and the odd changing settings thing has gone. Hopefully given a few weeks it will improve further, the last one improved with use. 🙂

Same here...no noticeable improvement that I've seen though. In the past it's mainly been extra apps i've noticed appear but not this time so I've no idea what the latest update was for, no results come back from google either :?
