On the face of it, yes -- the detail in the kid's hair, for instance, would've been crushed and blown out using your previous settings.

Try a few more, with the curtains closed and showing some of the same stills you posted earlier on this thread. (I assume you're not using the camera flash, if so, turn this off when taking the pictures.)

Cheers, will do now.

Some more of Expert 1 settings:

Make sure the HDMI input your BDP is connected to has the same Expert 1 settings.

I'm not sure if the 980 will automatically copy settings over. It's probably easiest to change these manually; should only take a minute or so. *smile*

For all the pictures you have posted the ones of your VT 50 or 65 can't recall have been the most impressive to me. That's why I think there is big room for improvement for you.

It's not criticism it's help

Gel's VT65 was professionally calibrated; and I agree, neither of us are criticising Gel in any way, we're simply trying to help him get the best out of his TV.

Curtains shut and Black Hawk Down:

Those look very similar to the photos on p. 1 of this thread. Did you update the settings on the HDMI input your Blu-ray player is connected to?

It may be that that this particular scene looks overexposed on the Blu-ray. The CBBC photos you've put up look much more balanced, so something's not right somewhere.

Thought so... see, we can tell the difference! *smile*

I think the same is true of the Metallica shots you put up (if it is Metallica; I'm no heavy metal expert, so excuse me if I'm wrong).

Do you know what noise reduction is suppose to be on? I just changed it accidentally? Cheers.

I think gel's point is that phone cameras struggle when it comes to blacks.

I still maintain that this discussion is pointless as the pictures are from a camera phone. You just cannot comment on TV calibration on that basis. There are too many variables at play here.

I agree to a point and I'm not suggesting any camera will perfectly represent how a TV looks when your'e in the room watching it, especially when those pictures are viewed on a laptop screen or PC display, which adds yet another variable.

I still maintain that the level of white blooming and black crush we can see on Gel's pictures exceed, by some margin, any variables a camera and laptop display would introduce. I also know Gel likes a bright picture, and on this basis he may pump contrast up notably beyond the optimum level. Every photo I've seen of Gel's OLED shows detail in bright areas substantially blown out.

I'd therefore be interested to see pictures of Gel's TV displaying the same stills he posted earlier on this thread, only this time using the recommended settings pasted above. The very worst that could happen is the pictures look more or less the same and we conclude it was a pointless experiment.

Hmm, maybe the whites are deliberately blown out during this scene in Black Hawk Down, so it might not be the best in terms of demo material.

Did you change all the Expert 1 settings on the HDMI input -- so Dynamic Contrast and Super Resolution are set to Off, for instance?

Yep, all definitely changed. To be honest I haven't seen a bad picture yet on this TV, they all look pretty good to me. I have definitely noticed a change though especially on Sky. Think I will have a rest from photos now.

I can't argue with that. Taking and uploading photos can get pretty tiresome.

If you stick with the AVForums settings this is as good as you'll get without professional calibration. The CBBC photos look excellent. If that's an indication of how most content looks then everything's good.

The TV content looks better than the blu ray content - its full screen so that helps but there is somehting a miss.

What video setting do you have the LX71 blu ray player on - Have you gone through them PDP, LCD or Professional etc

Gel these are the areas we are talking about which dont look right

showing%20gel_zpsu1dgumvk.png

His face is a white mess on my screen and the lamp is also - there should be detail in all of that, I have never seen anyones face look like that with a lamp on them - in fact I have just come back from the park and even on a bright an sunny day like today nothing looks like that. If it doesnt look like that on your screen and its just the phone cam then fine, but if it looks like that on the screen then you can get a lot better pic I am sure

Do I need to save the Expert 1 settings somehow, or will they always be there?

What settings should I change in my Blu-Ray player, it's the Samsung 7500?

Sorry mate not sure I was thinking of the Pioneer - It could be the TV does or doesnt like a YCC or RGB signal

What are you sending to the TV - check in the settings mate and report back

While your at it - this is the easiest way to set your brightness - you need this test pattern from any source, spears musil (not free), masciator or AVS HD both free

maxresdefault.jpg

You raise the brightness until you see 16 flashing the lower it until only 17 is flashing and 16 is not - once you have the pattern it couldnt be any easier
