I am considering this two systems with it's original speakers (they can be replaced in the future):

Denon D-M40

Denon Ceol Piccolo DRA-N5

Sound wise how they compare? Which one is better?

Thanks

I have the former and it sounds just fine for what it is. I would imagine that the latter has the edge being slightly more powerful and therefore more capable of driving any speakers you may upgrade to, but you don't get the CD Player as a trade off...

I can buy the ceol 100 euros cheaper and with Denon provided speakers. I am affraid of working problems with built in wifi

No brainer. Go for the Ceol if you don't need a CD Player.

Would the amp be as good as a budget separate like Denon PMA520AE?

I have not heard it but almost certainly not. However if you go for the 520 you have to also fork out for a streamer/network player, (possibly) a DAC and tuner to match the functionality of the Ceol.

What are you trying to achieve? Is it a simple system for playing/streaming music or are you planning to upgrade as time passes? If it is the latter then you may want to rethink the Ceol/DM-40 and Look more at products like the 520.

I would like to have the opporunity to upgrade at least the bundled speakers and have an amp that would sound good with some tannoy mercury v1i or q-acoustics 2010i.

Either amp should be fine for that kind of an upgrade. However both of your speaker choices will need to be partnered with a good pair of stands to get the best out of them. Spending £100 on stands for speakers costing the same may sound crazy but the improvement would be worth it.

I'm sat here listening to that Denon ceol and a pair of Roth RA1 speakers ,I spent two days listening to and tracking around hi-fi stores , I'll be buying the same again

Só you think that sound quality wise it is good system? What about those roth speakers?

I think its an excellent pc of kit , faultless airplay connection , plug and play , great display , as for the speakers you can get them between 60 and 100 quid , google andrew edward review for them

Do you think that there will be a huge difference between q-acoustics 2010i and 2020i? Some seem to prefer the 2010i. And what about the budget Roth Oli RA1? It was rewarded five stars from Whathifi.

Having owned both Q Acoustics models I thought that the bass was much bigger on the 2020i. I suspect that due to their size people preferring the 2010i were using them on shelves, desks etc. rather than on stands, and that the lighter bass of the 2010i's was therefore better suited to such a location than the 2020i's which really need stands to fully focus and tighten the bottom end.

I think you have three or four speakers to go listen to ( Roth RA1 and RA2 Q 2010's and 2020's) , you'll not find any negative reviews of any of them so it really comes down to what you like for yourself. The dealer may also have another idea or a trade in ex demo thats better VFM.

I think its time to hit the shops and demo

Good Luck

Dear James

In the end you have chosen Roth Oli RA1. Did you compare them with QA? The only ones that I have access in stores are the QA's.

I have a deal on some Cambridge Audio SX-50. Would they be a good choice for the Denon Ceol?

Sorry I didn't , I think the QA's where £150 or so at the time so above the budget I had for the system , see if you can listen to a set up at a shop. Best thing you can do is get into a shop and listen to some gear and buy what you like the best.

I ended up buying qacoustics 2010i. But I am not entirely sure if I made the right decision. The speakers are on the top of a table at a distance from the wall, I think the sound should be more clearer and less boomy. Is this because they are new? Will the sound get better? I think I should have bought Cambrigde audio SX50 or Denon SC-40 speakers as they seem to have more depht in the sound withou losing detail an clarity.

The 2010i is a decent speaker but will not give anything close to their best positioned as they are. Positioning and setup is important if you are going to get any sort of quality, if, for whatever reason, you can't use stands you limit the potential a lot.

The speakers will be uncontrolled and there will not be much help from the amplifier which will have to work hard to keep them clean.

Probably best to have stuck with the bundled models in this instance.

The problem is that I don't have space for stands. I understand that positioning and setup is one of the most important things however I can't understand why the sound is so muddy even If I move them away from the wall. The included Denon speakers have a clearer treble and bass is more controlled.

Do they need some time to run?
