I have a small office audio system where I play my Ipod linked to a Russ Andrews
cable through my Audiolab amp to a pair of Wharfdale diamond speakers. Would
there be a significant better sound by linking my computer through a DAC rather
than my Ipod? If so what DAC would do the job?

In my opinion there would not be a significant difference, but PC to DAC to amp will do a better job. The PC route also allows access to the likes of Spotify, Last FM etc. For that reason alone I would go the DAC route.

My comparison is ipod to GQ-24 to MF amps to headphones, versus laptop to the Fubar USB II DAC with its Supplier to the MF amps and headphones. One of the MF amps also has a DAC in it, similar to the V-DAC. So as for DACs I would say the Fubar DAC and Supplier if you rock and want drive or the V-DAC if you are classical and want detail. The V-DAC wins on price.

But, again in my opinion, there is not a significant difference between the DACs.

EDIT - I just hit 2500 posts, yipee!

IDC - many thanks - I didn't even think about the sound from other sources but yes I think I will go along the DAC route. Thanks again.
