Personally, I'm going to hold out for either a 4K TV (when Sky announces its 4K plans) or a projector, although a TV is more realistic option.

In my view you should keep your Kuro for as long as it continues to work.

In my opinion and experience, there still isn't decent and reliable alternative. And the 5090 beats the last generation Panasonic plasmas for outright black level. I've seen this first hand on calibrated TVs, side-by-side.

Sony's flagship doesn't, although you don't like its off axis viewing.

The 905 uses "local dimming edge lighting."

It's a deceptive piece of marketing language, but it's still an edge lit TV, and it still suffers from uneven lighting as a consequence.

If you still want to trust Panasonic one more time:

I'm interested in Sony's 2014 4K offering, especially with its tie up with Netflix.

Neither are within my budgetary constraints, I'm afraid.

I really can't spend any more than I have already.

If I get the time, I'll definitely have a look, and I'll also chat to someone about my tv, and the possibility of exchanging it.

If you're happy with your GT50's black level in Professional mode (if I remember rightly, you use the Pro settings posted on here last year) then the F8500 matches this,* without the luminance cap. So the F8500 will go as black as the GT50 in Professional mode, and considerably brighter.

The F8500 is also better with 50Hz motion, so is probably better for watching football.

* Pre-2013, Panasonic plasmas had higher MLL in their ISF (Professional) modes.

Hmmm....that is deceptive. Sony never released this model in the UK, hopefully 2014 will bring better news.

You're forgetting the Japanese wife = no Korean tv equation. :)

I should say, however, that uneven lighting is a relative term. Of course some models are notably better. Obviously there's some variation among TVs with the same model number, too...

The Sony is one of the better performers in this regard, based on what I've seen in-store (admittedly under bright shop lighting) and what I've read in reviews. As noted, the off-axis viewing requirement is the real issue for me.

Oh I'm not. I'm placing faith in your powers of persuasion!

Come over, and I'll introduce my wife to you, then start a conversation on the merits of Korean tvs. You'll see.

I normally like a challenge, but I think I'll avoid face-to-face confrontation in this instance.

I'm happy to correspond by email.

How long is her reach? I can take a virtual punch without staggering.

My point was more that she'd hunt you down.

Looks like a Sony 905 is your answer.

I can offer no further assistance, virtually or in person.

You mean you're just not willing to.

I understand.

Evening all

Looks like my decision to shy away from a VT65 as the replacement for my GT50 is the right one...

Well, it is if the UE55F8000 arrives (ever) problem free

After 2 Panasonic plasma's in 2 years, enough was enough really

I note with interest that JL have sold out (online) of the 50VT65 again. This TV is still flying off the shelves for this retailer! I also noticed that the Samsung 8500 plasma is no longer being offered.. My local JL @ home has one, but the PDP has had it, I think the IR is beyond help after 8 months of 10 hours a day in 'demo' mode

Interestingly, the same JL @ home never stocked the VT65...

I can confirm what gel said, the PS51F8500 is in stock at JL MK, and it's ticket priced at £1649, but I didn't get to talk to any members of staff, so I was unable to check how much stock they had.

Cheers BBB.

I'll call my local John Lewis tomorrow and see what they say.

Did you get to see the F8500 in action? If so, what did you think? (I appreciate that it's difficult to judge a plasma TV's quality in a brightly lit store, with the TV displaying demo material and almost certainly set to Dynamic.)

If that doesn't work Strapped, phone the MK branch and get it delivered.

I only saw it briefly from very close up, and I wasn't sure if the feed was HD or not, so it would be unfair for me to judge it at all.
