I think the Samsung 51F8500 is the answer for most people. It isn't that expensive either. Why not go that route?

I looked at it again in JL today...

I'm just not that impressed to be honest! (plus it ends up being more expensive than both the F7000 and VT65 as hardly anyone stocks it, so there is little chance for a price match from JL!)

£1500 at Power Direct:

http://www.powerdirect.co.uk/product/SAMSUNG-51-3D-Plasma-TV-FreeviewHD-Smart-TV-WiFi-600Hz-PS51F8500

Only £30 more than the VT65 and you get cash back too.

i think it needs to be calibrated to get the best out of this one. Dynamic looks better than the normal setting!

Dynamic? Did anyone mention IR??!!

The one in my local JL is horrendous, the IR is so bad I reckon the TV is a write off....

dont discount f8500, I auditioned vt65, zt65 & f8500, bigger screen size won over zt & I ended up buying f8500, which I maintain is outstanding & I'm sure it will get better after it's calibrated on 9th dec, but watching films like pacific rim etc. it's hard to believe it will.

I'd be getting well ahead of myself to even contemplate what my replacement would be, but the 55F8000 is probably top of my list, though nowhere near the top of my wifes. ;)

Viewing angle isn't a problem, as we view head on, and having seen a 55" and 65" close up recently, I didn't notice any uneven backlighting issues. My biggest reservation with the 8000 would be getting a natural looking picture.

I couldn't be happier with my 55F8000 BBB and I can confirm I have no issues with uneven backlighting and it trumps my previous Sony 46HX853 in that regard as that did occasionally show some slight signs of it, the F8000 and 7000 have micro dimming panels which really help keep this issue at bay and I've yet to pick up on one single instance of it and I would say I'm over fussy with picture issues like most of us on here.

I've said it many times in various threads but going from a Panasonic plasma nightmare to the two LED TVs I have had has been a pleasant and issue free experience when compared to the sheer amount of issues I had with all my plasmas. I felt no real lack of picture quality or that I was being short changed at all when I made the switch although I'm sure if I wasn't so careful with the sets I chose that may well have been a different story, keep to the top of the ranges and excellent LED TVs are out there and once calibrated the picture from my 55F8000 is brilliant and very natural...every new disc I view brings it home just how essential it was that I got this TV calibrated.

I can highly recommend the 55F8000 and for me it suits me perfectly as I can watch movies, game on it and watch the TiVo box on any channel and use the Smat Hub all without fear of causing any issues and to me that's the main thing, the TV is going strong and constantly receiving updates which seem to enhance every aspect of performance and functionality and I'm a very happy chappy with it.

As you say though, dealing with John Lewis is the first port of call so have you done it yet? As they are my retailer too I would really like to hear how you get on with them as MrW who is also in a very similar position as you had some problems getting a resolution.

Rang JL a few minutes ago, and they'll be sending out an engineer on Thursday morning.

The guy on the phone did try to make out that the pink hue on the centre third of the screen was down to a dodgy hdmi lead, but we'll see what the engineer has to say.

Awesome.

The scary thing is, these guys have been trained.

When I popped in to John Lewis a few months back, I pointed out to the sales guy (who seemed to have stepped straight out Phone Shop) that placing the Samsung F8500 on the floor was a bad idea, since the AR filter made it impossible for customers to see the picture without lying down.

He smirked to himself, gave me a condescending look, and replied "I know how LED TVs work mate." I'd recommend buying from John Lewis, but that bloke was a grade A tw*t.

I hope John Lewis come through for you on this one.

Unfortunately, there are grade A twits (sic) in every company, and I didn't really like the sound of the JL guy on the phone, definitely had a huge attraction to himself. :)

I'm hopeful that this will all get sorted quickly, but we'll have to see. I just need to record some content that will show the problems, and luckily, football shows both problems quite clearly.

I've encountered my share of salespeople and they're a particular breed of w*nker.

Normally I'd avoid such blanket statements; but I can honestly say that I've taken a great dislike to every salesperson I've known.

They say things in aggressive tones such as "You don't ask the customer what they'd like to buy; you tell them what they're going to buy."

I worked as a contract manager before returning to education, in an office shared with the sales department. I found the atmosphere so toxic and the people so objectionable that I vowed never to work in such a place again.

Philosophically I had nothing in common with my former "colleagues." Never mind. It was great motivation to work hard at something else.

That rant had nothing to do with TVs, but it was cathartic.

Good work BBB

I do hope the engineer agrees the TV has an issue when he sees it and as ever post back with how it goes but fingers crossed it gets sorted very quickly with the minimum of fuss.

As for salesman...don't get me started! Every single one of them are full of s**t, they will tell you anything to make a sale and I hate all of them with a passion and any place with aggressive, uninformed salesman I avoid like the plague like any branch of Currys or PC World. What's worse is that it doesn't have to be like this and some of the best places to shop are those that don't employ such tactics in order to make sales, those people will get repeat customers. It's not rocket science or perhaps it's just me... :?

A word to the wise...

I 'recorded' some of my 'issues' to a HD from the TV (from Freesat and Freeview both in HD) and the 'engineer' said that in all cases the problem was my aerial...

As oldboy has said, I had something of a battle with JL, and had to point out that my Aerial and Sky Dish had been professionally installed at considerable cost, plus the Sky dish had recently been double checked by a Sky engineer who had fitted an octo LNB. In all cases the TV showed that signal quality was night on 10/10 as was signal strength.

I really hope you can get a resolve BBB (how old is your TV?) as I, for one, will be monitoring your progress with interest

Thanks MrW

Tv is 11 months old, and has had the vertical banding (dse) since day one, and I had the chance of changing the tv within the first month, but decided against it.

I don't have an aerial, everything comes through Sky, and the signal is decent. You know and I know, that a poor satellite signal doesn't manifest itself as vertical banding, or a pink hue on parts of the screen, so if they do try that one on me, I'll be waiting with a sharpened tongue.

OK, so our TV's are approximately the same age (mine was 13 months old when I picked up the phone)

Keep us informed, and good luck

Well, the engineers have been and gone, and they've taken my tv away with them.

I was a little concerned that I could hardly see the faults this morning, but fortunately, the engineer could see them.

They've told me that it requires a new panel, which they have to order, and will talke 4 days to arrive. They'll be an additional day for doing the repair, so hopefully I'll have a perfect tv back around next Tuesday or Wednesday.

encouraging so far...

I had the same experience, but then JL insisted that the repair company conduct extensive testing (leaving the TV on all day every day!) before they ordered a new PDP.

As you know, that new PDP was never forthcoming, and they had my TV for 17 days before even attempting to return it to me...

I'm rooting for you BBB.

I'm following this thread with interest; since my VT65 has screen uniformity problems and is outside JL's right to return period.

I'm appalled at the time and energy we have to spend to get a TV that works properly. Sadly our experiences seem to be the norm rather than dodgy products that slipped past quality control.

I have little confidence that it's possible to buy a problem free* TV any more. Reviews tell us that technology is always improving; but that doesn't reflect my experiences.

* By "problem free" I'm not referring to technology specific limitations such as dynamic false contouring, but to problems that shouldn't occur and are manufacturer specific, such as blobs and bands.
