'Accidentally' found myself in a Pansonic store today, looking at a 50VT65....

Should I?, Dare I?

Needless to say they slagged off the F8000 (slightly unprofessional I felt)

Guy in the shop says Kuro technology is found in VT and ZT but nothing below that, is this correct?

It is up to you on the Panasonic TV. Nope I would say that is not correct at all on the Kuro technology, the GT60 is known to be nearly as good as the VT65.

Definately incorrect information given to you there...what a surprise!

Panasonic took a lot of the Kuro engineers as soon as Pioneer sacked them so to say that shows just how little that salesman actually knows, and again no surprise that he slagged off a non Panasonic TV...what did you expect when you went into a Panasonic store...they weren't ever going to recommend anything other than a Panasonic TV were they even if it was complete rubbish.

It's up to you if you buy another Panasonic plasma but are you really seriously considering it after all the hassle you have been through already? :?

I guess not!

Just watched Dr Who in 3D on the GT50, in the dark, and you can really see that the PDP is shot!

Hopefully gel hunts out a deal for you soon and you can wave goodbye to the GT50 and start again. I wouldn't rule out a GT60 or VT65 just bear in mind what you have been through and go into it with your eyes open and fully aware you could have issues later down the line.

I'm not anti plasma or Panasonic it's more a case of understanding how big a scar multiple issues can leave you with and especially when Panasonic react so poorly to complaints. It just leaves a bitter taste in the mouth and makes you loose confidence in the manufacturer and the tech.

Or at least in my case that's exactly what happened sadly.

Can you change your mind within 28 days if you don't like it?

The Samaung and the Panasonic are different. The Samsung is clearly better when it comes to image retention and screen burn. I have owned four plasma TVs which have all gone wrong now but I just had to have another one. One was even a Pioneer Kuro 5090 and then went wrong too!

One concern seems to be that John Lewis are permanently out of stock of the 50VT65. It is a couple of hundred pound cheaper than the Samsung, and means you can have it now (if John Lewis had stock). I think Panasonic shop might price match Total Digital too.

Richer Sounds seems to have upped their game and price match, and the Panasonic shop is an option with a 6 year warranty. If you hunt them down on the internet the Leicester one delivers to me and I am miles away!

I have watched some dark scenes on mine recently, and the centre third is dark like it should be, but the two outer thirds are much lighter, kind of like light bleed on a LCD/LED.

I'm having tomorrow off, and will be ringing JL.

Sounds like things are getting worse with your GT50, BBB.

I'll be interested to hear how you get on with John Lewis outside of the right to return period.

He'll be in the MrW boat!

:?

Head - Yep the VT65 or ZT65 looks great but how many problems will you have later in the TVs life and how many will you go through before you get one you can live with?

Head - Plasma is a tech soon to be consigned to the dustbin, LG and Samsung won't be far behind Panasonics anouncement...there must be a good reason for that...OLED.

Head - The Samsung F7000/8000 are fantastic TVs, get it calibrated and you won't be disappointed.

Heart - Take the risk and get a VT65, just make sure it comes from John Lewis or Richer Sounds and has a full 5 year warranty and keep your fingers crossed all is OK when you get it.

It's not an easy decision MrW and I don't envy you at all...I agonised over it for weeks before I made a decision but what I will say is that the more you look the more difficult the decision becomes. Don't listen to salesmen and take your time to make the decision that is best suited to you and your needs for a new TV, fortunately you have a bit of time before you have to make a decision so be patient.

What about Samsung F8500 plasma?

I had a look at the F8500 last week at JL, points worth mentioning:

1) To be honest I'm not keen on the 'styling' I think the Panasonic's look better, as do the Samsung LED's

2) The one I looked at in JL had the worst (and it was really really bad) IR I've ever seen on a plasma! (you could plainly see the smart hub images through the picture being watched!) There was a Samsung rep in store and when I pointed it out he said it could be cured quickly, I'm not so sure it wasn't past the point of no return!

3) I personally didn't rate the picture over the F7000/F8000

Cost wise (with price match at JL) the VT65 is the 'closest' to my refund for the GT50, so my outlay is less

I'm also starting to wonder if a 55" might just be a little too big (I know there is no such thing as a TV that is too big, but the 50" one on the wall at the moment seems to be just right)

As oldboy says, I have time on my side so I'll just sit tight for now (guess the only issue here could be diminishing stocks of VT65 'if' I do bite the bullet)

Ditto for the one I saw at my local Jon Lewis before I settled on the F8000. The F8500 I saw had image retention of the smart hub too and was clearly visible through the demo feed on the TV but what must be taken into account is the way in which they are used in store, they show the same demo feed and menus for 12 hours a day and as such don't represent real world TV usage. There are menu options to reduce the effect of IR and washes for removal which I'm sure the stores don't use plus the fact that they are used in "shop mode" which boosts contrast, brightness and colour to above normal levels to attract customers on the showroom floor.

The F8500 is a great TV and when used in a home environment I'm sure none of those IR issues will be present, Samsung plasmas are far better when it comes to image retention than Panasonic and for the record I've seen plenty of Panasonic plasmas exhibit the same issues on the showroom floor and it's just a problem with the plasma tech. In shop mode the settings are extremely bright and so image retention is far more common, the stores don't calibrate the screens or use any of the options to reduce the effect so judge them on picture quality and ask for the remote to check the settings for yourself.

@oldboy all the TV's I played with in JL were set to Dynamic, and had just about every 'image enhancer' turned on

I turned everything I could off, to try and get a decent comparison

What I did notice was the enourmous difference between the F6740 and the F7000, the picture was dreadful on the F6740 when compared to the F7000

Clearly, there is a considerable price differential, but with some shopping about the F7000 can be bought more realistically

Today I had the opportunity to see a 55F7000 and 55VT65 side by side.

The picture on the F7000 appears to be somewhat 'sharper' but the VT65 looks more 'life like'

There was also some backlighting 'issues' on the F7000 which the sales person suggested is the norm on anything above 46" on a Samsung

That aside they are both great TV's

No, a 55" would not be too big.

Oh sure, the 50" seems just right - until you replace it with a (slightly) bigger one! But I acknowledge that I'm biased, I used to have my 50" Pioneer in the kitchen, until I thought it looked a bit small so it was replaced by a 60" LG.

Cost is playing a big part right now...

Jump is currently £500 + to a 55F8000 or under £300 to a 50VT65

and Father Christmas is expected to make an appearance in a month, can't have the children wondering where their presents are!

dilema's dilema's

I noticed they were back in stock earlier

£1469 price matched against Totaldigital, is this the last chance to own? (seems unlikely as panels are clearly being produced, so it's down to JL to decide if they continue to stock it...)

There will be no gaming on this, that will be down to the 42G10, which seems unaffected by IR, DSE and the like (or maybe even either of the 2 ageing Panasonic LCD's the children have in their bedrooms!)

Heart, head, heart, head....

I can hear you @gel, it's coming through loud and clear... "do it, do it, do it!"
