These take a lot of beating.

Mind you, you would have to double Cno's budget to have any hope of getting a pair of these into a system.

You could still afford one for listening to your mono recordings. 😉

Or not, I have been listening to some late 50s Blue Note recordings. Interesting for a number of reasons.

Firstly, they are a good representation of the state of the art at that time. Performances are generally recorded in one take, to single track mono tape, though back up recordings were often made. Strangely the back ups were sometimes recorded on two tracks although Blue Note did not fully embrace stereo recording until 61-62.

The mono releases are generally regarded as the best from this period, but most of what is available to stream is 'reprocessed' to some sort of 'stereo'. Normally I would try and avoid such obvious manipulation but given the engineering talent available to Blue Note (Rudy van Gelder et al) I find some of the reprocessed recording to be quite listenable with increased separation between instruments with no obvious loss of coherence.

Whilst I would prefer the original mono versions on the grounds of authenticity, 'stereo' versions show that remastering is not always a complete disaster.

I would cash the voucher, and probably upgrade speakers, although to what I've no idea. I would then put the rest away towards the new Alfa Giulia.

You can't cash the voucher...it has to be spent on hifi.

I would recommend a Klimax DS along with your speaker upgrade (PMC Twenty26? or Ref 1s)

Spoilsport! *i-m_so_happy*

Don't know. I'll have a ponder.

A little part of me hankers after a pair Dynaudio Contours, but they are probably sideways step. Trouble is you need to live in a barn to accommodate the Dyns - they are very deep.

Had a re-think. To go with the Tucana I would buy an Antilla CDP and Gyrodec + a pair of speakers.

Are you trying to give me nightmares? *wink*

No, that would involve getting you in a suitable room with a pair and playing BIA at outrageous levels!

Well that would give me nightmares anyway....*wacko*

My uncle has a pair of ADAM Audio SX-Series S 7A’s. They are in his all glass conservatory (tiled floor) on top of a couple of wooden kitchen stools right in the corners, AND he sits about 2m away from them. What a waste!

I’d probably have the system I’ve already got which is nearly that price, but I’d have the 25-26 speakers in a bigger room, plus some power conditioners and a better nas. Then im done.

Welcome back 🙂

So I've decided to keep my speakers. Will just add a

Pass labs HPA-1
Focal utopia headphones
Parasound halo JC 1 mono blocks
Innous zenith mkII
Mytek brooklyn Manhattan

£8k on DSP hardware and an engineer to set it up, feeding a 500 WPC Nord amp setup. The rest will go on their nominated builders to sort an anechoic listening room as an extension to my existing room... and furniture. Phewwww it took me ages to think of that!
