A Quad 405 would be overkill for my needs. But I have thought about a Quad 306. A nice compact unit that is supposedly well suited to classical music. But (a) I have never heard one, (b) the standard input sensitivity seems a bit high compared to a typical integrated amp.

The idea of using a DAC or headphone amp as a pre amp has interested me for a while now.
Are DACs up to the job?
Has anyone adopted this approach or heard the results?
