I want to know a little more about the connection a Sky plus HD box to an AV reciever so I can get 5.1 sound via optical cable and HD pictures via HDMI. Do most AV recievers support the use of these connections simultaneously? or would I have to connect the HD box to the T.V via HDMI and channel my optical sound to the AV reciever separately? Any help would be appeciated.

Usually on the amp you can assign an optical connection to an HDMI input, so that when you select the Sky HDMI input it takes the sound from the optical connection instead.

How you do that depends on which amp you've got.

Yes, you should be able to route the HDMI to the TV and the optical to the AV separately. This is pretty much de rigueur for anyone with an AV amp with no HDMI inputs (like mine!) and works fine. The only issue which can arise, is that because of the relative times taken for the TV to process the HDMI signal and display a picture and the AMP to decode the signal from the optical cable, you can get some lipsync issues.

Apart from that, everything should work AOK.
