I trying to decide a Screen Size...

SMPTE says at Max is at about "30 degress" which allows 110" at 15 feet.

So according the SMPTE

1. Are they recommending to watch at 30 Deg and preferebably go closer ( Increase the "Viewing Angle degrees" )

or

2. Are they recommending to watch at 30 Deg and preferrebably go further ( Decrease the "Viewing Angle degrees" ) ?!?

Thanks.

From my own experience I would say this guideline is the maximum angle, any more (i.e. greater than 30 degrees) and your eyes have to start moving to take in the whole picture which induces eye strain.

I havea106" screen at 15ft, and whilst I like as big a screen as possible, I know that if I see a couple of feet closer to my screen I start to get eye strain from my eyes constantly moving to take in the whole image.

So to answer your question, I suspect its option 2.

I believe it's actually Option 1, surprisingly. Quote "EG-18-1994 recommends a minimum viewing angle of 30 degrees for movie theaters. This seems to be becoming a de facto standard for front projection home theaters also. Viewing from this distance or closer will result in a more immersive experience, and also lessen eye strain caused by watching a smaller image in a dark room"

THX recommendations for cinemas say the angle should be at least 26o for the rear seats, and recommends 36o

And here's a handy calculator: Viewing distance calculator
