It would be interesting to hear on peoples opinions on here what they think the best ever hifi bargain has been. so far. By that I mean actual hifi components such as amps, cd players, speaker etc including things like dacs, phono amps ,subs . Take the latest Beresford dac ,owners seem to be claiming getting the performance of a £800+ cd player for about £150 which I dont doubt, same could be said for the dacmagic, but at a higher cost means not the same bargain, anything else?

I would agree that the Beresford DAC is a very good value upgrade for price, my really cheapo cd machine sounds loads better. I don't know what it would do for a high end machine but it certainly is a good bit of kit.

A good cheap upgrade for those new to hi fi-ing is some speaker stands to liberate the speakers from the bookshelf, not only do they help the actual speaker sound but will get the speakers to ear height so they sound better that way as well . Better interconnects between cd and amp to replace the freebee ones you get when you buy the player...

Free or really cheap is damping down the sound of the listening room, curtains and soft furnishings to get rid of echos

as is taking the phone off the hook so no one bothers you whilst lestening to the music....

bk monolith. a beast at the price, definate value for money (mostly down to buying direct).

have to dissagree with an i-pod being good value for money, any apple product being value for money is an idea i cant get my head around

Depends on how you view it; in terms of longevity, my P3 has 8 years under its belt now, at the original RRP of £300, that makes it pretty good value! However, my take would be one of the classic pieces of hifi that opened up quality reproduction for a relatively low outlay; the NAD 3020.

Considering the ipod's versatility, capabilities and revolutionary impact on hifi I think that it is value for money. I have also picked one of the more expensive ipods in the range as an example. Add on a decent set of earbuds and the ones I use are on Amazon for £17 and you have a tiny, high quality, great sounding hifi in one.

What about the Airport Express? Revolutionised HiFi.

Having thought about RS' post, I'll trim my selection back to just the Lack. Been around for ages, cheap as chips and performance for which others would pay hundreds.ÿ

Sonneteer Campion, there simple is no other amp under £2000 that pushes the right buttons for me as this one.

The NAD C325BEE. I just love this amp and think it represented astonishing value for money. It never sounds remotely like a budget amplifier.

I'd also have to say the V-DAC, the Pioneer A400, and the Wharfedale Diamond 9.1s which all perform well above their selling prices.

I would not call Ikea racks and such hifi components but I suppose if they improve your sound for little money they could be classed as an upgrade bargain, Is the ipod a 'hifi' component too?,For me my speakers perform well above the £230 I paid for them, they outshine the likes of MA BR5 for example to my ears anyway, But they retailed at £350 I dont think they are the best value hifi ever by a long shot ,especially not having heard all other speakers at this level. Some say the NAD 3020 amp was the best VFM piece.

Got to be the C.C. Silver+

Good call. It seemed expensive when I was handing over the money, but from the minute I heard it, it seemed to be excellent value for money. Probably all the interconnect most people and most systems will ever need.

Pioneer A400. I bought one in 1990 for £240 and it's still going strong at my dad's. If it were to be sold, would probably get £100 back.

I would like to say my PL-12d, but that was at the 2008 2nd hand price (£25!) not the original, so I feel it should be omitted.

My vote goes to the Apple AE for allowing computer based music to become a convenient audiophile reality for everyone.

Given the prices that virtually all Musical Fidelity kit falls to at some point in their lifetime I'd have to vote all MF wares (baffling marketing approach there, Mr Michaelson).

Rega kit is excellent for the cash too. The Apollo CDP was £499 not so long ago. The R3 and R5 speakers, now replaced by the RS series, always seemed to be good value.

All AVI kit, particularly the Neutrons and ADM9.1.

Cambridge Audio 840 series.
