Hello All,

I have recently bought the Onkoy 605 receiver and am in the process of trying to connect it to my speakers. I have purchased the QED Silver Anniversary XT speaker cable terminated with banana plugs based on the What Hi Fi advice.

This is the first time I have used a speaker cable that is terminated in banana plugs and I find myself unable to connect it to the Onkyo receiver. The width of the banana plugs is too big for the connection points on the receiver.

Are there different banana plug sizes or something? Needless to say I am quite upset about forking out the extra cash for the banana plug terminations when it appears that the receiver will only accept bare wire. The receiver manual states that it accepts banana plugs, but I believe this to be incorrect.

Has anyone connected the QED Silver Anniversary XT speaker cables with banana plugs into the Onkyo 605's? How are you connecting your speakers to the receiver if not using banana plugs? Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,

James

Hi James, I think that it is possible to get different size plugs, however most are usually a standard 4mm thickness. I have the same receiver and I have a mix of different brand banana plugs stuck in the back of mine.

Just one thing, and this may be pretty obvious. Have you removed the little plastic caps that cover the speaker terminals on the back of the receiver?. You'll not get any plugs into the sockets unless you take them out. You can pop these out with a screw or flat screwdriver.

Cheers, John.

Hi John,

Thanks for your reply. I can't see any plastic caps over the ends of the terminal. After some more digging around in the manual I found it states that in Europe connecting speakers to a receiver using banana plugs is not allowed. I am based in the UK and I guess that this means that Onkyo have placed slightly different speaker terminals on their European models so as to ensure that people don't use banana plugs.

Do you have a US model Onkyo?

Cheers,

James

John,

I have had a closer look and you are right. There were small black plastic caps over the terminals which I needed to remove. Quite obvious

but somehow I still managed to overlook it. Anyway, thanks for the information. Now I am on to placing the speakers around the room. Looking forward to hearing it in action.

Thanks,

James
